First off this is forbidden to enter. Is located in the middle of the estate and you can literally drive right past it if you don't know where it is or what you are looking for. Such a shame this was abandoned back in the day as is a very beautiful castle. Feel so sad rhat people not only break in because they want their piece of history for themselves but that people choose to vandalise this place. This piece of history is crumbling and unsafe to venture in yet we do but to leave behind rocks covered in graffiti isn't the way this place should be remembered
A bit of history:
Dating back to the 1850s, it was built by the instruction of James Graham, the 4th Duke of Montrose. Intended as a family home, it remains a Clan Graham seat today. The current ruin’s predecessor had been home to the Clan Buchanan but was sold to the Grahams in the 17th Century, before it was destroyed by fire in 1852. This beauty replaced it. Sold in 1925, grand 1930s plans for it to serve as a hotel were dashed by World War II when its function became altogether more practical. It was firstly a hospital and then a post-war school. Buchanan Castle’s most fascinating nugget of information, though, stems from the brief visit of Rudolf Hess, the Deputy Fuhrer of Germany in the midst of that great conflict
I love these old ruins and Buchanan Castle is just one of many that I have taken an interest in this year. You can read about a few more of my abandoned and derelict favourites to date here. Each has their own poignant story as former family homes and they’ve all had ambitious subsequent plans for use, yet now they all sit lonely and forgotten. Feasts for the imagination and wonderances at what might have been.
Buchanan Castle, like other abandoned buildings are not necessarily safe or accessible to visitors. Some sites are fenced up, others not, but I would never recommend entering...
Read moreSo I don't often leave reviews but I decided to because after reading a lot of reviews on this place I decided to check it out for myself. A lot of people mentioned it was dangerous and some people didnt even go in. So first of all when you get there go round the back and go into the trees and follow the fence along to the right and after a little walking you'll see the big hole in the fence. As you'll see from the pictures I explored pretty much all of it. It was amazing walking around trying to Imagine how beautiful this place once was. There is even an underground section you can get into but I didn't have a sufficient source of light to see any possible trip hazards ect. I even managed to climb to the top of two towers but I do express caution as there is a lot of loose dirt on the stairs so be careful. All in all there is definitely dangers when exploring this once wonderful castle but I wouldn't let it put you off going in. There is some holes in the floor but use common sense and stay away from it and stick to the edges just incase. Outside of that it's fine, again just use common sense and be careful when walking around and you'll be fine. Definitely...
Read moreBy far, out of the three other castles I'd been to, this one is my utmost favorite. Secluded off from the world, only a few other people were there in the time that we were and we were all in different areas. It was extremely quiet. It's fenced off, but we were told by some people that looked like they lived near the place there was an entrance, and to just be careful while we were in there. When I got up close to the castle, before I even got in, I already felt like I was in a movie, that the scenes would have been perfect background shots. Every room, I could feel, had a story to tell. I loved it so much! There were a few places that you had to be EXTREMELY careful, wherever you walked, but the rest was fine. Lots of greenery had taken over the place, and a tree fell in one area. There was a tower that could be climbed. A board (BE VERY CAREFUL) to walk across to get to another level. The ONLY thing I did not like about this place was the graffiti, but nothing can really be done about that. This place was perfection. And?! You don't have to pay...
