Burghead Well is an ancient underground pool carved into the rock beneath a Pictish fort. Was it a pagan ritual site, a Christian baptistry, or something else entirely? After years of waiting, I finally explored this mysterious site—and it didn’t disappoint! I picked up the key at 12 noon on Sunday and made my way to explore the well. I’d been here so many times (but at the wrong time for key collection). The sub was out and seagulls a squawking as I turned the key. The site is tiny but simply perfect. It’s the mystery. What was it for? Who built it? Also my great great grandfather lived here. He would have known of the well and visited it or at least walked past it. Did he climb down these same old steps. And you get it all to...

Park near the Burghead Visitor Centre either by following the route Gmaps takes you to get there or by driving past the street it would take you if you type in directions to Burghead Well itself and turning left at the end of the road onto Forteath Street - this takes you past the historic Harvest Reaper boat and onto a coastal carpark from where you can climb a steepish path to the visitor centre which takes a small donation to visit. The Centre has the keys to open the gate at the Well site during the Summer months so you need to go there first, otherwise you'll only be able to see it from the pavement and won't get near the well, let alone inside it. The VC is open until 4.30 daily, otherwise the site is...

So good to see things from so far back in our rich and diverse past being exposed, shown and cared for. We are steeped in complex history, and this is a great example of the landscape being used, even back then, to the advantage of the inhabitants. If you have time, visit here, take in the solidity of the place, the stunning views, and the practicality with the commanding position into that part of the Moray Firth. And just let your mind go back to what it must...

Love Burghead, lovely little village with a long history, and plenty of views form the top of the village. Including if your lucky, dolphins, whales, and in winter the aruora if really lucky.
