Carraig Fhada Lighthouse on Islay Island is a hidden gem for those who appreciate both maritime history and stunning coastal landscapes. Perched on a rugged promontory, the lighthouse offers a striking view of the surrounding seascape and is a testament to the island’s maritime heritage. The lighthouse itself, with its classic white and black stripes, stands tall and proud against the backdrop of the crashing waves and rocky coastline. Its remote location adds to its charm, providing a sense of solitude and a connection with the untamed beauty of the natural environment. The journey to reach the lighthouse is equally rewarding, with scenic paths that lead you through picturesque terrain and offer spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. During my visit, the lighthouse exuded a serene and timeless quality, enhanced by the gentle sounds of the sea and the occasional call of seabirds. The historical significance of Carraig Fhada, combined with its dramatic setting, makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Islay. The lighthouse serves as a poignant reminder of the island’s maritime past while offering a perfect spot for reflection and photography.

I recently stayed in a holiday cottage close to this unusual lighthouse. It’s a one off and really attractive especially when illuminated by the sun. I saw it being lashed by wind, rain and waves and also shining in sunlight. It is a little way out of Port Ellen but worth a visit. It is on a single track which isn’t in good repair but can be travelled with care. There is a very small (three car) car park a short walk away.

Early 19C lighthouse which unusually is not the classic cylindrical shape. You can park quite close but there is a short walk to get closer. There used to be a bridge allowing access to the skerry on which the lighthouse is built but this is now closed. The lighthouse has been adopted by a fairly large group of wild goats that you have to walk past - the alpha male is cautious but not too aggressive 😉
