After the impressive Sinclair Castle we've had some time left and came here for a quick visit. There were only a handful of other visitors that day. We knew there isn't much to see or left of the castle. But the short walk along the coast with its wonderful rock formations and the views were really worth our time. The official carpark is an easy and short walk away only and leads along the coast. The date of the castles origins are a not exactly known, but it was somewhen around the later 14th century it is assumed. The ruin sits on a spine of rock. There used to be drawbridge, which is long gone and lots of the four-storey tower has collapsed. It's currently fenced of and access denied. But you can still get nice views of the ruins - and it must have been quite the sight back then when it was still standing. Here on the coast, looking over the sea. It's not the longest thing to visit, but worth a quick look. And the scenery is just really pretty.

Castle of Old Wick – A Quick Stop with a Nice View There’s not much left of the Castle of Old Wick these days — just a crumbling tower standing on the edge of the cliffs. You can’t actually go inside or get very close either, as access is currently closed off, so it’s more of a distant viewpoint than a proper explore. That said, the setting is pretty dramatic, with the sea stretching out behind it and cliffs all around. You can imagine that, once upon a time, it must have been a very impressive place. Now it’s more of a quick stop to take in the coastal views and stretch your legs if you're passing through the area. There’s a small car park nearby and it’s an easy walk to the viewpoint. Worth a short detour if you're in Wick, but probably not something to go out of your way for. Great views, just not much castle left to see.

It is worth the effort to come and see this ruinous castle. The castle is sign posted and after about a mile you will find the car park. There is no charge for the castle or the car park. The coastline here is dramatic. You will need about 45 mins to walk out to the ruin and back with time for a look inside. On the day I visited there were cows in the field and they just sat where they were just mind where you put your feet. The walk is way marked and easy to follow just stick to the path as it is a very rugged coastline. The castle itself is ruinous and you do wonder how on earth it was built in this place in the 1160's. Once you have visited the castle you return by the same route knowing you have visited one of the oldest castles in Scotland. Good footwear and waterproofs are needed the weather can change very quickly.
