First visit to this castle. Lovely location, with the Nethan Gorge next to it. Plenty of spiral staircases, cellars and high views over the countryside. From the car park, you go downhill to castle. You can walk round the castle and under it. Spiral staircases have rope or metal rails. For those less able, there is still plenty to walk round. And benches to rest on. There is very clean toilets. A shop to pay your entrance sells some gifts and snacks. After visiting the castle, I took a walk to the Gorge viewpoint. This is reached via irregular sized steps down and then up. Craignethan Castle is tucked away down a long single track roadway in the Clyde Valley, South Lanarkshire. It is a wonderful place to take children to explore and to develop their imagination living in a sixteenth century Scottish castle. The keep is now open after being closed for a while and is now totally safe with much of it accessible by spiral staircases. Love this castle I have been with my kids twice great for playing hide and seek and picnics. However if you go into shop with kids be aware there is a staff member who works there who really does not appreciate kids touching ANYTHING even the toys!!!! It's the only historic scotland property I have been to I have had any issues with kids as the other places don't really mind if kids touch stuff. Hence the 4...
