The first time we visited Cuween we were driven back by torrential rain which almost formed a river pouring down the track from the cairn to the parking area. Thankfully we were not deterred and returned the next day. What a wonderful site. In effect a smaller version of Maeshowe, beautifully preserved and as mysterious. Not quite as spectacular as it’s larger sister, it has the advantage of being much less visited so you can contemplate the eternity into which our ancestors were cast in peace and quite. Having visited all of the major chambered cairns scattered throughout the islands, this is perhaps my favourite.

After visiting the cairn be sure to continue up the path to the left of it. At the top you will find a large number of cairns and pillars presumably made by walkers on the St Magnus way. The views...

The entrance to this place is way less than a meter tall. Unless you're a small child, the only way to get in here is by crawling in your all fours. Not sure how it's inside as we didn't feel like getting dirty to find out.

There's a torch there that you can use, which is really nice, though it needed new batteries or to be charged so it wasn't of much use.

If you go a bit above it you'll find some cairns made by people from our times, which look really good. Make sure to go up there and a piece yourself if...

Fascinating place, completely free and well worth a visit. You'll need a torch (phone will do) as it's pitch dark inside, and you'll have to climb over a stile and crawl through a low tunnel to get in. There's a good information board outside. No other facilities, but the parking area and access is well maintained. It's not remotely on the same scale as Maeshowe but it is a similar design, and does have the advantage of having very few visitors, so you can take your time having a thorough...
