Drum Castle Review

Drum Castle is a hidden gem nestled in the Aberdeenshire countryside and one of the oldest tower houses in Scotland. Steeped in over 700 years of history, it beautifully combines medieval, Jacobean, and Victorian architecture. The original 13th-century tower is striking and gives you a strong sense of Scotland’s feudal past.

The rooms are beautifully preserved, especially the library and drawing room, filled with antique furniture and portraits. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable—willing to share fascinating stories about the Irvine family, who lived there for centuries.

Outside, the walled rose garden is peaceful and well-kept, especially in bloom during summer. There are woodland trails too, perfect for a gentle walk through nature. It's a fantastic spot for photography, picnics, or simply soaking in the calm.

A small café and shop are available, and there’s good parking on-site. Entry is free for National Trust for Scotland members, otherwise reasonably priced. A must-visit for history lovers and anyone looking to explore the charm of rural...

We only viewed the castle from the outside as we were primarily here to see the chapel and the walking trails. There is a lot of scaffolding up currently as the tower structure is being worked on and is closed off and the kids playpark is also closed (October 2023) so I suspect there will be some work going on through the off-season months and perhaps some new playthings will be available soon. We enjoyed the chapel very much, it's lovely inside, and the small family and pet cemeteries behind it are beautifully kept. We followed all of the walking trails and took in the fantastic view from the trig point on the blue route before heading off to the walled garden which was gorgeous even at this time of year. Without going inside the castle itself, we spent around 2 hours exploring the grounds. There is a nice little cafe here, a gift shop and an accessible toilet. Parking costs £3 per visit or free for NTS members as per normal. Entry to the walled garden is £5 per adult if not an NTS member. Entry to the castle (guided tours available only) is £15.50 or £30 for a family if not an NTS member and is timeslotted but booking is...

We had been in the past for tours, as my husband’s family is Irvine and this is their clan castle. It is always lovely and beautiful and the staff friendly and informative; and we decided to hire them as our wedding venue.

Everything from start to finish was just incredible. Planning a wedding in your own country is a challenge, planning one from overseas is something else entirely, but Aidan made it so easy. He knew everything from photographers to caterers to pipers and all of his recommendations were spot on. When I couldn’t find a minister overseas to officiate my ceremony, he offered to do it himself (!) and he was absolutely brilliant. On my wedding day the castle was immaculate, everything ran smoothly, we even had our wedding dinner there and it was just marvelous. Wonderful setting for photos inside and out. Just grand. I cannot say enough good things about Aidan and staff, and whether you’re looking for an engaging tour of a beautiful historic site or a place to host your wedding, Drum Castle is it. You won’t regret it. Every touch is added. It was PERFECT. Thank...

We enjoyed our visit to Drum Castle. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly and we found the information interesting. Unfortunately, it was pouring cats and dogs when we finished, so although we did make our way to the gardens it was hard to enjoy them with the weather. That said, you could tell that the walled rose garden was a special place and the water garden we passed was quite peaceful. The only reason I’m rating this a 4 vs a 5 is because there are a few other walled gardens that are larger with more variety for the avid gardener. My only recommendation would be for the tour guide to end the tour with more info about what we could find outside. The walled garden is a short walk from the castle and could easily be missed. We just happened to ask about it.

My husband and I got married here in March 2024 and we cannot thank the staff enough for making our day so special and amazing! Special props to David and Jerri, who helped us organize our day. And also to Paul, our amazing guide we had. This place will always have such a special place in our hearts. We stayed at the little cottage they have on site as well, and that was an incredible way to start our honeymoon. They have amazing forest walks around the property. We saw a double rainbow over the castle! Drum is an underrated castle in Scotland, I highly recommend everyone visit!
