Lovely walk for a rainy day. The path is slippery but you have a handrail. It is aprox 600 meters long and it was built between 1818-1822 at the request of the richest land owner in Falkirk at the time Mr Forbes who lived in Callander House. The reason was that it ruins the view from his house and also those who carry fertiliser and other stuff during night would ruin his property’s view and quality. So the engineer adapted the plan to suit him. And after 5 years after this landowner died the construction started and now is the longest canal tunnel in Scotland. Enjoy! Nothing gloomy about it just that Irishmen worked to built it and were some accidents during work but tunnel is now very well lit. You can also notice interesting formations...
Read more600m of civil engineering at its best. It is damp and wet at bits but worth it. Look out for Rex the toy dinosaur. Be careful with kids as the handrail could be high enough to let a small child fall through. I heard a couple whose small terrors were running riot towards my wife and myself with dog . They were 20 yards away from their brats . It is a great walk as is most of the...

There's a public car park at the slammanan road entrance. Park here walk down the wee rack to the tow path and be sure to walk on a little further after exiting the tunnel to the first bridge, known as the greeting...
