Although difficult to discern from the visible remains, this place was in its time the main centre of the Kingdom (then Lordship) of the Isles that retained a fair degree of independence throughout much of the high and later middle ages. The site was extensively remodeled in the early modern period (17C) so the big island's (Eilean Mòr) current configuration is somewhat different from what it would it have been at the height of the Lordship. The visitors centre although small helps to fill in the gaps. An enjoyable visit and the access path makes visiting easy.

An hour spent taking in the seat of the 'Lord of the Isles', situated in an atmospheric and beautiful setting. A boardwalk forms part of the walk, with the 7th - 16th century history explained on information boards located across the site. Visited on a Sunday, however the walk is still accessible (honesty donation box - cash). Consider appropriate footwear if a wet day as path heads through a field. Car parking available, and if the visitor centre is closed, the walk starts to the right of the building through a gate.

Better than expected. These places can be very dry and boring for kids with the odd activity sheet if they are lucky. The VR headset made a real difference to our 10 and 6 year old... even if they did just try to 'fly' into cows (can't explain). Would recommend doing this first then walk up to the ruins as it burned off some of the boredom from the car, put them in a fun mood and then we could point out things they had seen on the screen.

Go! Do not miss this amazing historical site. We went one afternoon and were truly impressed with the history and beauty of this place. We went close to closing but were kindly greeted by a warm and welcoming employee (sadly we don’t recall her name). She explained the history behind the site and its ties to Scottish history as a whole. Well worth the trip. The history she told us about we later saw echoes of throughout the rest of our trip throughout Scotland, particularly in Glencoe and Edinburgh. Thank you for such a wonderful and informative experience. I hope more people learn about Somerled and his descendants. I also hope that this site officially gets the funding it needs so that more can be learned about the Lords...
