Visited this castle on a rainy day with my father to see what it had to offer. I was not disappointed in the slightest, the views were absolutely gorgeous and the site was relatively easy to get to. There is a car park nearby where you can leave your vehicle and then walk around the ruins. Something important to bear in mind is that while you are able to walk around and view the site, you do so at your own risk. There are signs around the site which specify that if any part of the ruin or areas around the ruins was to fall, then it is not the fault of anyone but yourself. While this can be quite worrying, I believe the site was perfectly safe. At least it was when I visited and was...

I stayed at Cory End, Pier Road, Killin over the weekend of the 01 Sept 2018. This is an excellent rented cottage which comfortably sleeps 8. Built at the end of a disused railway spur to the Finlarig Hydroelectric power station on the shore of Loch Tay. The location is serenely peaceful. It is heavily wooded and approximately 1 mile from Killin village. This is easily walked along the disused railway line and has spurs which walk around the head of Loch Tay and provide a stimulating experience. Killin is an excellent jumping off point to explore both the Grampians and...

We explored on a drizzly day which offered a mysterious ambience to set the tone. It was a brief walk from the cemetery parking lot, and you're greeted by an informative plaque chock-full of the castle's history (both rich and grotesque). Many people were slain here and the ruins of the family's mausoleum and the beheading pit reflect that. The grounds are managed by a lovely man who we ran into while he was showing guests around the castle. Be cautious while exploring as the structure may not be sound and rocks/masonry can give out at a...

As part of my clan family history, I was keen to see the old castle ruins and find out about their history. There is no charge to look around and reading the history board will give you an indication of its history. Finlarig castle is perhaps best known for the square pit behind the main building. This was the beheading pit where enemies of the Campbells were dispatched. There is a car park for the cemetery nearby and easy access by a path from there. It’s no more than 50m to the castle itself.

Reminder that this is on private property. Do not climb on the castle, there's nothing up high that you can't see from below. There was a large stone next to a 6cm deep impact creater that must have fallen from the top of the western wall from three stories high. There are very large cracks running down three of the walls, and castle repairmen are hard to find these days. Consider leaving a donation in the box so they don't have to charge admission. Take your trash with you when you leave.
