Visited this castle on a rainy day with my father to see what it had to offer. I was not disappointed in the slightest, the views were absolutely gorgeous and the site was relatively easy to get to. There is a car park nearby where you can leave your vehicle and then walk around the ruins. Something important to bear in mind is that while you are able to walk around and view the site, you do so at your own risk. There are signs around the site which specify that if any part of the ruin or areas around the ruins was to fall, then it is not the fault of anyone but yourself. Built at the end of a disused railway spur to the Finlarig Hydroelectric power station on the shore of Loch Tay. The location is serenely peaceful. It is heavily wooded and approximately 1 mile from Killin village. This is easily walked along the disused railway line and has spurs which walk around the head of Loch Tay and provide a stimulating experience. Read moreWe explored on a drizzly day which offered a mysterious ambience to set the tone. It was a brief walk from the cemetery parking lot, and you're greeted by an informative plaque chock-full of the castle's history (both rich and grotesque). Many people were slain here and the ruins of the family's mausoleum and the beheading pit reflect that. The grounds are managed by a lovely man who we ran into while he was showing guests around the castle.
