Formidable fortification!
That’s the title of this impressive structure. Quite a humble, yet dramatic walk up to the entry. Massive walls. Operational a few decades after ever since the infamous battle of Culloden. The English ordered this fort to be constructed to hold Northern Scotland once they had quelled the uprising of the civil war. Took 22 years start to finish to build. Once you see how massive of an undertaking this was, it becomes apparent at how much effort it would’ve taken to do so. The engineering and humongous effort with basic, rudimentary techniques. It would have been interesting to see what the people must’ve done. Such deep excavation. So much material to be moved. With a shovel and men?!? Likely hundreds of thousands of block and bricks to be handled. Possibly women as well. Not uncommon for children to be put to work in that time. Late 1700s. Really worthwhile visit. We were in a rush so didn’t have time to follow the period costumed tour guide. Would have been very interesting to follow the group that I overheard introduction of tour. While my super, duper souvenir obtaining wife was shopping in gift shop. First leg of our marathon of site seeing that day! Managed to get through 1/3 of the massive and I mean MASSIVE location. Available are free little pre-recorded self guided tour devices. Handy but have to hold to ear to hear. Like a mobile device/cell phone. We’ll make more time next visit so we can jump in one on of the guided tours next time.
Managed to get through, quickly one of the best war museum displays I’ve ever seen. Included also in Explorer pass. Epic historical museum!
The entire visit was included in the Explorer pass. I’m telling you. If you’re spending any length of time in UK Scotland area, the pass is excellent value. Need at least 4-6 hours to do the whole thing properly I’d estimate. Depending how thorough you want to go. Easy parking. No elevation changes of great significance. Watched an elderly man with his family navigate with ease the facility he in wheel chair and smiling and happily enjoying time there with family and or friends. The younger men capably assisting him. Nice accessible entrances to toilets also. Super polite, happy people working the gift shop and ticket counter. Great friendly exchange with the folks in there. Quite entertaining lady hosting the entrance museum as well. Also very respectful and polite. Great day...
Read moreI TOTALLY LOVED FORT GEORGE!!! 🏰🐬. We visited Fort George on a Sunday, it was quite busy but we didn't have to wait long to buy our tickets, which were reasonably priced, £10-£11 for adults, £8-£9 concessions, and roughly £6 for kids. My mum is a carer for my dad so she got in for free. The Fort itself is massive, around the same size as 40 football fields. It is a star fort built in 1748 so it's steeped in military history. When you buy your ticket you are given a wee machine and a map with all the areas numbered, you type the number of an area into the machine and it plays, telling you all about that part of the Fort, it was very interesting. There are loads of little rooms you can go into that shows what it was like for soldiers years ago, there is also a cinema that you can sit in and watch the film. There is a cafe inside the fort which serves nice coffee. I liked how it is still a working barracks with soldiers living there. You can walk right up to the edge of the star fort and look out to the water, dolphins 🐬 can be seen sometimes but we didn't see any. I loved the big cannons, they were on track so they could be moved round in a half circle. I loved Fort George and I'm definitely glad we visited, well worth seeing, such an...
Read moreVisited last month and really enjoyed ourselves, the Fort overlooks the moray firth and is shrouded in rich history. The original architecture is present throughout and there is lots to explore. The views are spectacular and you get a real feel for the history of the Fort and the life of being a soldier in the 18/19/20 century. The church and the highland museum are a must!!! The history at the Scottish Regiments was very interesting and I would plan to spend 3-4hrs on a visit. The views over the ramparts are spectacular, can easily see Inverness and if you are lucky dolphins 🐬 swimming in the firth, unfortunately there was non seen on our visit. The gift shop is the usual overpriced “tourist tat”. There is a café on site, however there are plenty of nice views and grassy areas, so consider packing a picnic. Fort George is well worth a visit and at £9 for an adult (free for MOD) pretty reasonable...
