Inverewe Garden is a beautiful botanical garden located on the west coast of Scotland, in the region of Ross and Cromarty. It is situated on the shores of Loch Ewe, a sea loch that is part of the Atlantic Ocean. The garden is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including mountains, forests, and moorland, which provide a picturesque backdrop for the garden.
Inverewe Garden was founded in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie, a wealthy Scottish landowner and horticulturalist. Mackenzie was passionate about plants and gardening, and he set out to create a garden that would showcase the wide variety of plants that could thrive in the temperate climate of the west coast of Scotland.
One of the unique features of Inverewe Garden is its location, which is much further north than most botanical gardens. This means that the garden has to deal with very cold winters and short, cool summers. Despite this, the garden is home to a wide variety of plants, including many rare and unusual species that can't be found anywhere else in the UK.
The garden is divided into several different areas, each with its own distinct character and plant life. One of the most popular areas is the Rock Garden, which is home to a wide variety of alpine plants and flowers. Other areas of the garden include the Japanese Garden, the Woodland Walk, and the Palm House, which is home to a collection of tropical plants.
One of the highlights of Inverewe Garden is the Old Victorian Glasshouse, which was built in the late 19th century. This beautiful glasshouse is home to a wide variety of exotic plants, including orchids, palms, and ferns. It is a popular spot for visitors to take a break and enjoy the warmth and humidity of the glasshouse.
Inverewe Garden is also home to a range of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and small mammals. The garden is a popular spot for birdwatchers, and it is home to a wide variety of species, including golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and red deer.
In addition to the beautiful gardens and stunning landscapes, Inverewe Garden also has a number of amenities and facilities for visitors. There is a café on site, as well as a gift shop and plant sales area. The garden also has a number of walking trails, which allow visitors to explore the grounds and take in the stunning views.
Inverewe Garden is a must-see destination for anyone interested in horticulture or simply looking to enjoy some beautiful outdoor surroundings. The garden is open to the public from April to October, and it is well worth a visit if you...
Read moreDrove very long journey to get here, husband had been here as young child with parents and really looking forward to visit as already members of Benmore Gardens and visited Logan Gardens. Reception was big impersonal corporate building with very large overpriced shop and reception at far end. Felt we were coming for a job interview when we saw imposing reception area at far end of building rather than garden visit! Nothing about family or history of Inverewe but strange art exhibition and more merchandise ie brollies and capes to buy before heading out to gardens as it’s pretty wet here so be warned! Actual house visit itself was pretty weird, again - nothing at all about family history but some rooms kept presumably as original then a lot of modern unisex toilets and another weird art exhibition, kitchen had been revamped and a lot of writing in English and Gaelic - checked on Google afterwards and found out Osgood Mackenzie had spoken both English and Gaelic, he also liked shooting LOTS of birds to the point of extinction as well as creating the gardens - so glad the birds had come back! This visit could have been so much better if the National Trust had made the effort to tell you about the family and history rather than impressing you with a big modern building and trying to flog you merchandise and dubious art which didn’t even reflect the gardens. Never visited the cafe as already had read bad reports on it. So come on, pull your socks up NT, we are...
Read moreWe are nearly every year in this garden. We really like to pay for it’s maintenance and beauty, but sadly it is the third time we come and the houses and coffee is closed. Because of employees. I don’t understand it really. Therefore it is definitely much too expensive. Than another point is… This time it was the first time we have let our dogs in our car because it is only allowed to bring one dog per person. First time we left within an hour. We have three well behaved dogs. So this is unfortunately another destination which we can’t use anymore. We don’t like to let our dogs in the car if we are on holiday. First of all because of sunshine and because more and more cars/motorhomes with dogs have been stolen. Our dogs are family. Could be there was a time completely without dogs, but why? It is a really big area. You could have dog bags available, rule and signs with no dogs in ponds etc. What is with the not behaved children, I have seen more of them, running around in the plants and picking fruits in the walled garden. But not my garden,...
