A Hidden Gem Steeped in History – A Must-Visit!
I had the pleasure of visiting Lennoxlove House yesterday, (13.07.25) and it was truly a memorable experience. Nestled in beautiful woodland just half a mile south of Haddington in East Lothian, and not so far from Edinburgh; this historic house is an absolute treasure trove of Scottish heritage.
The visit began quite intimately—I was initially the only person on the 1pm tour, which made the experience feel incredibly personal and exclusive. A couple of walk-ins later joined, and it was lovely to share the journey with fellow history enthusiasts. But honestly, more people should make the time to visit this remarkable site. It deserves far greater footfall than it seems to get.
Lennoxlove House dates back to the 15th century, originally known as Lethington Castle, and has been expanded several times across the centuries, most notably during the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The architectural layers reflect its long and fascinating evolution, and each room tells a different chapter of its story.
What makes Lennoxlove even more special is the incredible lineage of historical figures connected to it. From the Maitland family to the Dukes of Hamilton, the house is steeped in stories that span politics, royalty, and cultural legacy. You can almost feel the weight of history in its rooms.
The guide U had was knowledgeable and passionate, and the setting itself—quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by nature—makes it feel like a true escape into the past.
If you’re even remotely interested in history, architecture, or Scotland’s cultural tapestry, Lennoxlove House is an absolute must-visit. I left feeling enriched, inspired, and slightly bewildered that such a magnificent place isn’t packed with visitors daily. Let’s hope that...
Read moreWas originally advised to visit here after getting a tour of Kinneil estate, which was previously a Hamilton family property. As I was told some relics from the time of the Hamilton Palace could be found there.
As someone from Hamilton who had done a personal study on the Hamilton Palace grounds/Mausoleum as well as the Chatelherault hunting lodge - it was a no brainer to go!
The bonus was seeing some artifacts from the Stewarts.
It was just the two of us on the tour, guided by the lovely Isobel. She was very knowledgeable and warm and had gathered a lot of stories from her 30 years of working at the estate.
Grounds were gorgeous, although we didn't have time to wander as we'd booked another excursion elsewhere nearby.
Definitely worth a visit.
Only thing I'd maybe highlight is there is no real signposting on where to park or where to enter for the tours. Thankfully someone in the estate office pointed us in the...
Read moreA very interesting visit. Our guide, Neil, was knowledgeable and informative, enlightening us on the origins of the house as Lethington Tower in the 1300s when it was owned by the Maitland family. He explained how it became known as Lennoxlove in the 18th century & that it was purchased by the 14th Duke & Duchess of Hamilton relatively recently (1946) and became the family seat. We learnt much of their family history illustrated by an extensive collection of portraits and other memorabilia, much of which originates from the long-demolished Hamilton Palace. As several reviewers have mentioned, signposting could be better coming out of Haddington & we initially drove past the entrance to the estate. In addition, some of the limited labelling of exhibits could be enhanced and it would be nice to see some labelling of some of the furniture. However well...
