We were recommended to go there, just a shame the actual castle was locked when we got there, so we walked around it and tried to look through the barred windows but it was too dark to see much. Lovely views from the fields around though but wish people would close the gates as it requests... The people who went as we arrived left the gate to the road a jar so the sheep could have got out if they wanted to. We closed and locked all gates as we went in and back out. Would have been good to have seen inside but still...
Read moreThe castle was built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, half-brother to Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney. In 1627 the castle was burnt down and apparently may never have been fully repaired.
Like all such structures left unmaintained all timber has long since rotted out. Which means you'll have to imagine what the upper floor would have looked like. But it's still well worth a visit. Also consider walking down to the shore to see if you can spot Viking...
