Visited Prestongrange museum as we'd seen it on google maps when looking ay the area where we were staying for the week. Absolutely fantastic site, lots of interesting things to look at and the volunteers working there were very helpful, friendly and genuinely cared about what they were doing. The site is free to visit, however they do offer guided tours for a small fee which is worth it to be able to go inside the engine shed and beam engine. It's a large site but you can make the visit last as long or as short as you like as there is lots of interesting things to look at. The oldest written records of freemasonry relate to the site, remaining independent within the Scottish Grand Lodge until 1814. A stately home at Newbattle and involvement with the Cistercian Monks of the Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders make it a significant historical site but one presently...

During the season, access can also be requested to some of the buildings to see the inner workings which are otherwise kept shut. Great for a walk on the sun, or just a walk with a dog. Even better if you stop and listen to the audio provided for each point of interest (requires a phone call at your standard...
