Scapa beach is a beautiful crescent shaped bay about 1 mile from Orkneys main town, Kirkwall. If you want to walk all the way from town, head towards the new hospital and head out of town. At the roundabout take the second exit. Walk along this road a little way and on the right hand side you'll see a trail clearly indicated. It means you can walk off the road. Just follow the path and eventually it will rejoin the road near to the beach. At this point there is a pavement. Continue on to the beach. There you can read about the ill fated ship, The Royal Oak, who was sunk losing over 800 lives. The wreck isn't visible but is marked by a green buoy at the point she sank. If you move onto the beach and turn right at the bottom of the steps you can enjoy beautiful white sands and may even get to see some seals and plenty of birds. If you're feeling energetic, once you go past the last building there is a footpath that follows the headland above the beach. Just turn right up the grassed Bank and you'll see it following the line of the fence. You can walk right along this past Scapa distillery and it offers stunning views of Scapa and out to sea. Be careful in places as the path is narrow and it is a steep drop. Be careful with young children. The whole walk, returning back to Kirkwall is...
Read moreA lovely clean beach, with a good mix of sand and stones, and plenty of space for all to enjoy! We only spent an hour here, but we had a lovely relaxing walk from one end to the other, plenty of splashing and exploring to be done with young children. Even found a jelly fish! Great views, and will visit again when back in Orkney. Parking not an issue when I went either. Despite it being one of the warmest days of the year, I was pleasantly surprised to not find the beach overcrowded (As you would expect on an English beach!). Cannot stress how relaxing and fun it was, a lovely hour for Mum and children whilst Dad did a tour around the...
Read moreA very wide beach, when the tide is out. For shell pickers it's a heaven. When I was there a couple of people were marking out a very large sand maize. Which upon completion was instantly in use by dozens of kids with parents/guardians.Walking on the beach is easy as it is quite firm and one can walk from the car park area,if so inclined,to the beach at the far end, possibly a good mile. Dogs are welcome, but you must remove any deposits including your own litter. A public toilet is available on...
