The volunteer (unfortunately didn't catch his name) was incredibly engaging and knowledgeable and gave us an introduction talk in two parts. The first sat in the reception office surrounded by Carlyle's books and the second in the downstairs of Carlyle's childhood home. After the talk there were three rooms to explore with many of Carlyle's belongings and information cards. Very enjoyable stop on our way North to Glasgow, thank you!

Enthusiastic staff member (William) gave a 20 minute introduction to the property and Thomas Carlyle history. Very interesting to hear. Three rooms to visit, with information sheets. Definitely worth a visit of about an hour. Note that whilst the website indicates Pay & Display parking, we couldn't find such a thing, the roadside parking is free.

Great place to visit, Julie who was our guide was a fountain of knowledge and answered any questions we had we had about Thomas Carlisle, we also got to see Charles Darwins signature which was incredible, well worth a visit.

We visited just after it opened on a Thursday morning. The museum is tiny but lovely. The member of staff who greeted us was absolutely lovely and gave us a superb introduction by summarising Thomas Carlyle's life. I loved my visit and the trip to buy the Ecclefechan tarts from the corner shop that she recommended.

The house is tiny so don't expect to spend much longer than 40...
