We visited the gardens ( the house was closed) on a rainy grey day in October with few expectations. How wrong we were! The staff were polite and helpful. Almost immediately watched red squirrels cavorting around the garden and the gardens themselves were stunning! We had vistas of the house from different angles, gardens within the garden and the mix of mature trees and younger trees and shrubs was encouraging with the thoughts of this being a living, evolving space not a museum. We finished with some presents for the grandchildren from the shop and delicious soup and cake from the cafe. A truly lovely day despite the...

A beautiful estate and garden, very well kept and friendly staff. The only reason I haven't given it a full 5 stars, is because through our whole visit and walks through the gardens, there were no bins to put our rubbish into anywhere until we got back to the car park at the front of the entrance which was a little bit of a nuisance, but I would suggest taking a bag for rubbish to carry it all for coming out. Dog friendly as long as dogs are on a leash at all times...

Whilst the bricks and history of the house are impressive we were lucky to be shown around by Martin. His knowledge of the property was immense and his stories brought to life the owners and their varying involvements into making the house what it is now. That our visit was preceded by a walk around some of the most magnificent gardens we have visited made for a truly memorable day. Highly recommended.
