Take a beautiful walk through the dene. From Seaton Sluice to Holywell bridge. Or vice versa. It takes about 60 mins one way at a steady pace; comfortable for all. See some fabulous ancient trees, plenty of streams, wildflower patches and bridges. The odd stile. Holywell Dene is a steep sided ancient semi-natural woodland and is traversed by a small river known as the Seaton Burn. Between Old Hartley and Seaton Sluice, where the river enters the sea, the valley widens into a tidal flood plain. Much of the Dene is part of the...

Holywell Dene, the wagon ways and Seaton Sluice are the greatest treasures in North Tyneside to South Northumberland. Such an amazing walk. There are restrooms in the park next to the harbour. All the pubs and fish and chips restaurant all have restrooms. There are many places to have a picnic. Take your dog for a walk from Whitley Bay past Monkseaton station across the road to the beginning of the wagon ways all the way to Holywell Dene all the way to Seaton Sluice around the coast to St Mary's lighthouse and back to...

Lovely place for a li'l stroll. 🏞️🌳🌊

However... please be careful what time of year AND what time of day you go. I've been caught out twice on the return leg to Seaton Sluice, by rising tides heavily flooding the path, resulting in sodden feet and boots. 😕

(I can imagine this being quite scary for more frail walkers, who may not be able to jump over, or wade through, some of the most heavily flooded parts).

(NB: A friend told me that there should've been signs warning of this, but we didn't...

Like Jesmond Dene BUT far less crowded. Darker. More mysterious. More authentic. I followed the National Trust self-guided walk from Holy Dene to Old Hartley (on their website). BUT you can also just follow the sign post for Holywell Dene and go explore. Loved the Fairies / Elves wooden signs near the waterfall. Cute!!! I'm sure there are a number of walks you can do from there (judging from the number of signposts). Cute bridges over the Burn, low trees over the river. Definitely worth a visit.

Fantastic place to walk dogs or just go for some nice views and fresh air. The dene is lined with tall trees and walkways throughout. There are fields all around and you can walk from Holywell to Sluice. Lots of wildlife to see and the dene is maintained by a fantastic group of volunteers "Friends of Holywell Dene". They trim back bushes, clear the river and have made steps throughout to make walking safer.
