Visited Skye in September of this year and was looking forward to breakfast at the Aros center. What a major disappointment it was to find that this superb family friendly restaurant had become an awful, dark (painted entirely black interior) empty cafe! There was quite literally people wandering about with looks of disbelief and disappointment on their face which definitely matched our own! But as we had been driving for hours we decided to stick it out and get something to eat. The only breakfast items were sausage or bacon rolls. We ordered one of each. They took 35 minutes to make as the boy making them was more interested in rolling pizza dough. When they arrived they were substandard and overpriced. Needless to say after that we remembered the Red Brick Cafe that does make fabulous food including breakfasts and we promptly went there for some real food (ask someone for directions if you dont know where it is seriously the 2 places are like night and day). If this cafe is run by the Isle of Skye candle company...somebody needs to have a serious re think! I cannot by any stretch of my imagination see how selling candles can earn more revenue with this cafe compared to what you could make from selling candles and offering a proper restaurant that cooks real food which is served in a pleasant atmosphere. If this cafe is not part of the candle company. The candle company should re assess its attachment to it. Needless to say as it is, I will not be visiting again and will tell people that if they are interested in candles...fine, the Skye candle company makes nice candles. But I will never advise anyone to eat in the cafe, not even tourists who must be wondering if this place really represents Scotland. August 2024. A year later. Yes, people are sharing photos of food in this cafe. But look at their surroundings and how empty the cafe looks. An empty cafe is not usually a popular one. BTW I love pizza, but you can get much better ones in Portree at Pizza in the Skye. Google it...
Read moreWe had to drive over to Portree for our vaccinations, so thought we would drop in for the first time since improvements started. The building has definitely benefited from a makeover. We decided to stay for pizza which was delicious, although the menu is very limited. The biggest disappointment was the poor service. We were asked to order our food via our phone, despite three waitresses standing behind the bar chatting. After faffing around with the app for 10 minutes my husband had to go to the bar to order as it just wouldn't work. Drinks arrived quickly, pizza not so much. Not once did a member of staff ask if our food was ok, if we wanted any further drinks or pudding/coffee etc. In fact, when we left, the staff were still behind the bar chatting with their backs to everyone, so they didn't even acknowledge that we had left! A lot of public funds have gone into this establishment, so I hope they will now plough some of it in to staff training, as the service was deeply disappointing and not somewhere we will...
Read moreHaving last visited the premises when it was Aros, we were delighted with the magnificent work done on the premises. I had one of their pizzas and my wife had a salad. Both were very nice and very filling. We also took some cakes away with us and they too, were very good. The lady with the light coloured hair and glasses who served us was really friendly and showed great customer service skills. The only disappointment was the attitude of the two youngsters working behind the pizza counter. The lady who served us had been helping get drinks out and then went over to take an order from a new table. While she was doing this, the young lad and the young girl, who were now standing doing nothing and could obviously see her taking an order, rung the bell for an order to go out. They continued to stand and watch the lady and then rung the bell again. Any team player would use common sense and seeing the lady was busy and they were doing nothing, take the order to the table themselves. Apart from that, our visit...
