Even during Winter, Tater Du Lighthouse is small but impressive. Tater Du Lighthouse - ‘The name Tater Du comes from the Cornish ‘torthel du’ meaning black loaf. The name presumably refers to the dark bulge of greenstone cliffs on which the lighthouse now stands (Cornishbird). The Lighthouse was built in 1965, after the tragic loss of 11 lives on the cargo ship Antonio which ran around in 1963. The Lighthouse is automatic and is part of the Trinity house, Lighthouse authority. There are 9 lighthouses in Cornwall: Eddystone Lighthouse St Anthony's Head Lighthouse Lizard Point Lighthouse Tater Du Lighthouse Wolf Rock Lighthouse Longships Lighthouse Pendeen Watch Lighthouse Godrevy Lighthouse Trevose Head Lighthouse Brief History of Cornish lighthouses: The earliest record of lights to help shipping is the payment of "beaconage" from fishermen to the chapel of Carn Brea in 1396. St Michaels Mount has a stone lantern on top of its church dating from the 15th century. A record of a beacon shown by the chapel of St Nicholas at St Ives is dated in 1538. Henry VIII's disolution of the monastries meant that these, and other, church beacons could no longer function, however Henry founded Trinity House in 1514 which then became responsible for supplying pilots round the coast, and later for the building and maintenance of lighthouses The building of lighthouses took place from the 17th century right through till 1965 when the last light was put up at Tater Du Parking: Lamorna Cove ‼️PAYMENT FOR PARKING - CAMERAS ‼️ 20 minute coastpath walk - wear suitable shoes No facilities Cafe and toilet at Lamorna . . .

Just got back from an epic company hike to Tater Du Lighthouse last weekend, and it was absolutely worth it! The hike itself was a bit of a challenge, but the scenic path made it an enjoyable trek. And the views from the lighthouse were simply stunning. The place looks amazing, and it's clear why it's such a popular spot. If you're looking for a great outdoor adventure with breathtaking views, Tater Du Lighthouse is a must-visit. Highly recommend!"

The South Coast Trail used to pass right in front of the lighthouse with the way markers still being present. The track was moved further up the hill. Still performing a useful function for local shipping but with advanced technology I wonder how long it will be needed for. It was a lovely position to have a break and watch the passing boats and have a snack.
