In April 2022 we booked a 13-day self-guided walk on the Coast-to-Coast through Northwest Walks, a small local family-owned local trekking company run by Dean and Corinna Halsell, that specializes in guided and self-guided hikes in northern England. My husband and I are in our 60s and have done a lot of hiking and backpacking in the Cascades, Rockies, and the Alps. The Coast-to-Coast is a fantastic walk - incredibly picturesque scenery and lovely friendly people who were happy to talk to us about ancient and recent history of the locale, sheep farming, border collies, tenancy rights, conservation, wildlife sightings. It was a remarkably fun and interesting trip. The walk was more strenuous than we thought it would be (whoever said England was flat?) with 2,000-4,000 feet elevation gains day after day in the Lakes District. Hiking between tiny hamlets in the The North Yorkshire Dales National Park was like stepping back to a much quieter greener era in time. We stayed in beautiful and impeccably maintained 200-400 year old B&Bs, and local pubs which were a great chance to mingle and talk with local people. Really wonderful trip! Keld is a magical place. Don't miss eating at the Jumble Room in Grasmere. Book early and try to get rooms at the Langstrath Country Inn in Stonethwaite, the Old Water View in Patterdale, the Hermitage in Shap, and Lee-Side B&B in St. Bees - a beautiful old ship captain's home. St. Bees is a fascinating town built on steep hills with many winding narrow lanes, and I only wish we had an...
