Coetan Arthur — Attraction in St. David's and the Cathedral Close

This is a fabulous neolithic site that should be visited if you are in the aera. Visiting is easy, head to Whitesands bay car park (51.897174093111616, -5.2940221280185105) this is a caravan and camping park and is easy to get to. There is good facilities for the park, there is a charge for parking.

The walk is around 1 mile from the car park but is not flat, it is undulating. Before you descend to the path to Pothmelgan beach (there is a small crossing) you can see the site to the northwest. Coetan Arthur dolmen, also known as Arthur's Quoit is the remains of a Neolithic burial chamber (also known as a quoit). It dates from around 3000 BCE. The site, situated on the hillside close to St Davids Head in Pembrokeshire, Wales, is the collapsed chamber of what is presumed to be a passage grave which also has a round barrow. The massive capstone measures approximately 6 m (20 ft) by 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) and is supported on one side by an orthostat approximately 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) in height.

Wir starten unsere kleine Wanderung am Whitesands Car Park oberhalb der Whitesands Bay auf der Halbinsel St. Davids. Der Zugang erfolgt über den Pembrokshire Coast Path vom Parkplatz Whitesands Bay entlang des South West Coast Path. Vorbei am Porthmelgan Beach befindet sich die Grabkammer östlich des Weges auf der Nordseite von St. David's Head.

Der Dolmen von Coetan Arthur ist der Überrest einer neolithischen Grabkammer aus der Zeit um 3.000 v. Es wird angenommen, dass die ungewöhnliche und faszinierende Felsenkammer ein Ganggrab ist. Der Deckstein misst ungefähr 6 m x 2,5 m und wird auf einer Seite von einem Orthostat getragen – einer großen Steinplatte, die künstlich aufrecht gestellt wurde – und ungefähr 1,5 m hoch ist.

Der Arthur’s Quoit, bekannt auch als Coetan Arthur, ist ein etwa 5000 Jahre altes Portal Tomb aus der Jungsteinzeit. Es liegt in der Nähe des Orts St Davids in Pembrokeshire in Wales. Anlagen dieser Art bezeichnet man in Cornwall und Wales als Quoit.

Der Quoit befindet sich am St David’s Head nahe dem Meer. Die Lage mit einem Panoramablick ist typisch für Portalgräber dieser Art.
