So much more than a bug farm!
Sustainable cafe - plant based apart from the bugs so only oat milk used. Barista coffees (decaff available). Lovely selection of bug filled and bug free vegetarian foods including cakes. Lots of indoor or outdoor seating and next to the indoor play barn.
Short wildlife trail through fields of flowers and past the resident retired cows, horses and bees to a bird hide. Through fields so not really wheelchair accessible.
Art gallery and 3 information rooms/exhibitions, one on bugs and one on the history of the farm and area. All a mine of really interesting information and have a sustainability angle which is interesting and informative.
Animals include dogs, chickens, goats, horses, cows and of course the bug house. The bug house has a wide range of bugs including a leaf cutter ant colony, lots of stick insects, tarantulas, beatles and snails. For a few pounds extra you can join a meet the bugs session (no spiders).
Outside is a small walled garden and a play area with little paths, a tunnel and living willow tunnels.
Parking is on grass or tarmac, there is an electric charging point and also no height barriers, should you wish to visit in a camper or motorhome.
Small shop selling a wide selection of sustainable products, bird boxes, toys, local produce, books, honey,...
Read moreWe visited today with our 2 children (under 10years old). There's lots of facts to read and some great learning areas, the bug farm area was really cool to see different bugs up close and I will see cockroaches in a different light! We did the bug handling session and the 2 women doing the demo took time to explain things to the group and each table, they clearly have knowledge and passion! We did the lovely walk around the fields and saw some beetles scuttling around as well as some butterflies the wild flower area is really beautiful.
We chose to bring a packed lunch but then menu offerings sounded and smelt delicious, we did stop by for hot drinks and cakes which were delicious and the menu prices weren't unreasonable for main meals.
There is a play barn area which big and little kids were playing in, a nice space for them to just burn some energy.
If you're visiting this place don't expect a theme park, it's a small place designed to educate and enjoy nature there's not loads of entertainment or interactive electronics but it is a really great place to educate yourself and your children on bugs and what we thought would be a couple of hours ended up being 10am- 3pm! Highly recommend a visit if you're...
Read moreAbsolutely loved it here, the countryside surrounding is so peaceful and natural, you could spend hours just walking through the field an meadows let alone the displays. Every display contained such interesting facts including important and engaging messages. The mixture of outdoor and indoor activities was a great blend and you can feel and appreciate the passion Dr Beynon has put it to this bug farm. Our children are still talking about it 4 hrs after is a testament to how much they enjoyed it. Having the author of Beetle Boy (M.G Leonard) doing a reading was a great touch and enjoyed by everyone there, she was also so approachable and was genuinely happy to sign multiple books and answer questions for the children. We were also fortunate enough to meet (unknowingly ast 1st) Dr Beynon and she was so friendly to us all and amazing with the children, she was happy to answer any questions or chat. Dr Beynon's work and her farm is inspirational, and whilst being great fun, you also leave feeling enriched. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone. Thanks...
