I had the great privilege to visit Chatterley Whitfield Colliery twice when I was about 11 years old. Once was a school trip, Me and my class mates went down the mine shaft. It was pretty spooky when we all turned off a headlights briefly to experience the darkness while we were travelling down in the lift. We ventured around the tunnels and i remember sneaking a small piece of coal in my pocket which I have to this day. Its sad the place had to close as i would have loved to bring my children...

Once one of the largest deep mines in Europe it is now a shadow of its former self. I had the fortune to get a guided tour on one of the Heritage open days. What an experience !! We need to keep this place open ! Do check their web pages to check on open days. Unfortunately there arent enough of them. The volunteers are so enthusiastic and dedicated they deserve the reward of being swamped with visitors. Become a friend for £5 a year ..... make a donation...... but let's keep this...

Grew up visiting and going down the mine as a visitor. Have tried a number of times to get on a tour but places always seem to have gone before we see it advertised. From the top of the hill looking down at the site it's looks fantastic. It's a shame that it's not possible to walk around the buildings more often. The parkland created around the area is well worth a walk and had had some great paths put in. You can walk many different routes. Here's hoping to get on to a...

Absolutely fantastic. Please go and support these guys. We arrived just after 11 am. and didn't leave until 3.30 pm. We loved every minute. We took out a membership for £5. Free parking, facilities, and refreshments. What more could you ask for? This is a brilliant example of industrial heritage that needs saving. The volunteers are fabulous, full of knowledge, and very friendly. I can't wait to go back.

The guys are really friendly and knowledgeable sharing there own experiences with you. The site is fascinating and fully of history not only about the site but mining In itself. This site is a real gem and it is important to ensure that it is preserved for future generations to learn about the important mining industry. I would highly recommend a visit to appreciate the staff and the site.

Great place to visit if you love history & especially industrial heritage. There's nowhere like this ex colliery in the UK for sheer scale, with great photo opportunities from outside the boundary fence, especially from the hillside above. The staff are lovely & very informative. This place really should be a World Heritage Site.
