I had the great privilege to visit Chatterley Whitfield Colliery twice when I was about 11 years old. Once was a school trip, Me and my class mates went down the mine shaft. It was pretty spooky when we all turned off a headlights briefly to experience the darkness while we were travelling down in the lift. We ventured around the tunnels and i remember sneaking a small piece of coal in my pocket which I have to this day. Its sad the place had to close as i would have loved to bring my children...
Read moreOnce one of the largest deep mines in Europe it is now a shadow of its former self. I had the fortune to get a guided tour on one of the Heritage open days. What an experience !! We need to keep this place open ! Do check their web pages to check on open days. Unfortunately there arent enough of them. The volunteers are so enthusiastic and dedicated they deserve the reward of being swamped with visitors. Become a friend for £5 a year ..... make a donation...... but let's keep this...
Read moreGrew up visiting and going down the mine as a visitor. Have tried a number of times to get on a tour but places always seem to have gone before we see it advertised. From the top of the hill looking down at the site it's looks fantastic. It's a shame that it's not possible to walk around the buildings more often.
