Nestled in the serene heart of West Wales, Talley Abbey stands as a testament to the rich historical tapestry of the region. Visiting this enchanting site, one is immediately struck by the profound sense of tranquility that permeates the air. The ruins, draped in a mantle of time, whisper tales of bygone eras, inviting a contemplative walk through history. The picturesque surroundings are a haven for nature lovers, with verdant landscapes offering peaceful walks and moments of reflection. What makes Talley Abbey even more appealing is its open invitation to everyone without any charge. It’s a rare gem where the beauty of nature seamlessly intertwines with historical grandeur. Great free site, The monastery, which was founded by Rhys ap Gruffydd in or about 1185, is in the care of Cadw. In common with Strata Florida Abbey, it was once claimed to be the site of the grave of the medieval Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym, but this is one of the discredited theories of Iolo Morganwg. There are two lakes near the abbey ruins, which were used for fish farming to support the community of monks. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII and the structure was mined by the villagers for stone to build much of the present village and the chapel next to the abbey. The ruinous tower is surrounded by steep wooded hills, and it can be reached by a circuitous lane from the main road. It is well signposted. Make sure you take a walk down to the lakes,...

Walked the blu trail. The walk is clearly marked from start to finish. The first mile and a half is a steep ascent with a few picnic benches on route. The path is well maintained easy underfoot. The path path meanders its way through open countryside then through a beautiful pine wood. The steep climb is truly worth the effort as spectacular views of Talley village, abbey and lakes come into view. A picture moment. The walk is very peaceful apart from a barking dog in the distance which echoes through the valley. Here again is a picnic table ideal for a break and take in the view. The descent is very easy as there is a gentle descending path which is good underfoot. An excellent walk highly...

Not a large site to explore, but the church tower remains to a significant height and gives the ruins some presence. The footprint of the church remains visible from the remnants of stone walls but a lot of the cloister and associated buildings seem to have been built over. There are no facilities on site but there is parking for around four cars at the entrance. At the time of my visit the site was unstaffed and there was no admision charge. A nice quiet location to explore should you find yourself this way.

Tallest Abbey is a delightfully quiet location to visit. There is a small car park for 3-4 car close by. There is an information board close by which gives a lot of information about the reason it was built and a background to the ecclesiastical goings on at that time. It is well kept and you can wander around wondering what it may have looked like if they had finished it.
