Wonderful picturesque and breathtakingly beautiful heritage steam railway in the Cotswold with amazing steam and diesel locomotives and great things to see and do. The railway itself runs through the picturesque Cotswold Countryside for a stretch of 14 miles between Broadway to the northern end and Cheltenham Racecourse to the South and makes for a wonderful and beautiful relaxing railway journey and calls at stations such as Toddington, Hailey Abbey Halt, Winchcombe and Gotherington. Gotherington and Hailes Abbey Halt are request stops and at Hailes Abbey Halt stop you can enjoy great walks in the countryside but also see the Brilliant ruins of Hailes Abbey and at Gotherington you can more relaxing walks. There is a host of things to see and do at Toddington and Winchcombe stations and at Toddington Station you can visit the Diesel and Steam Locomotives Sheds and see the Locomotives at a distance and admire their quality and engineering and there is guided tours on selected days where you can learn further amazing information about the trains. At Toddington you can visit a wagon museum learning all about how goods were transported on the railway line and about some heartening information about serviceman who served in the World Wars who had links to the railway line. There is a narrow gauge railway which is also open selected days and you can see some interesting features as you wander around Toddington you can see the Water Tower and the Waiting rooms and also the Demonstration Signal Box giving you how Railway Signalman worked and gave out signals to trains to help them move safely along the line. At Winchcombe Station you can see a Model Railway, which is awesome to see and there is a marvellous exhibition about the history of the railway. You can enjoy rides on a series of runs including Locomotive 2807. You can also enjoy some spectacular picturesque views across the Cotswold Countryside and towards Breedon Hill and the Malvern Hills. There are cafes at Broadway, Toddington and Winchcombe selling a variety of food and drink at reasonable prices and there are gifts shops at Toddington and Broadway selling a variety of souvenirs at reasonable prices. Overall this is a thoroughly enjoyable and marvellous place to visit and makes for an outstanding and amazing day out. Definitely well worth a visit whilst in...

We had a great day out, Broadway to Cheltenham racecourse. Some interesting information available about the heritage track and engines and the many volunteers who work so hard to keep this railway going for our enjoyment. I am surprised by how undersold this attraction is in the village of Broadway. It was only by chance we came across it when chatting to a fellow holiday maker. At the station you can park in their purpose built car park even though some of their literature actually says there is nowhere to park! Must be a recent build. You can walk from Broadway, it is around 15 mins to the station along a straight road with a footpath. Again completely unmarked/unsignposted until you are there. The station is lovely with cafe and shop. On the train journey you can sit in any of the carriages and there were many different ones: compartments with corridors, first class, buffet, etc. Lots of interesting things to see along the line including the Toddington loco museum, the stations themselves and the countryside. We just went straight through to the end of the journey which is at the racecourse. Here, you can pick up a bus to Cheltenham if so wished. The only thing I'd say about this, and this is no fault of the railway, is be prepared to walk because the park and ride is at the other side of the racecourse. There needs to be a shuttle bus TO the bus, it's a long way even in good weather. Some kind of arrangement between the railway and buses might be of benefit, maybe a community arrangement, as it was all a bit vague and we were worried we'd miss the bus or not have time to walk back for the last train. On reflection we would probably have been better stopping at some of the other stations on the way and having a cuppa and a look round, rather than going into Cheltenham. We did really enjoy our day though,...

I visited last year and loved it so much I went back this year - Twice within eight days. I had such a good visit when I mentioned it to other family members they said they would like to visit as well, so I went along with them for the second time.

We boarded at Toddington where there is ample parking. There is a lovely café, located outside the station, with plenty of seating inside, and outside, to accommodate everyone. They offer the usual coffee/tea/hot chocolate selection, although with a small food menu. I can highly recommend the toasted tea cake.

The station is lovely (although it will take a lot to beat Gotherington where you can the people who run it take a real pride in their little piece of heritage) like taking a little step-back-in-time and the volunteers who work there are great. No question is too much trouble for them.

The journey is smooth and passes through some beautiful areas with far-reaching views and plenty of photography options both off, and on the train.

They run different trains depending on their timetable. The first week they had a steam and old diesel running; the second both routes were run by steam. You can get on at any station, of at any station, and as long as you check the timetable first you are free to hop on/hop off, all day.

The seats are comfortable, the carriages clean, and the onboard buffet is worth paying a visit to. Their bacon baps are delicious.

If you want to travel in the first-class carriages - and why would you not? - they don't charge any extra (I really think they should) but it is encouraged you make an additional donation towards the railway upkeep if you do travel in one of their carriages. We all donated an additional £10 each which felt like...

Caveat: I only visited Winchcombe station and did not take a journey. It is a really pleasant place. Not the biggest car park but when I visited there was plenty of room. Very hot weather. You are encouraged to cross the line using the footbridge, obviously but there is a level foot crossing at the opposite end if you consult staff for guidance. A double headed diesel train arrived which aroused the interest of a couple with sophisticated camera kit, but, I'm sorry, they just don't have the alure of steam. So I browsed the history carriage, next to the model rail carriage. A volunteer ran a couple of OO guage trains on a very good display. Exhibition standard, I thought. They also had an N guage display further along which is my preference, but nothing was running. Excellent display cases adorned the carriage walls, again, mostly OO. Nonetheless, certainly worth a visit. Had the usual magazines and DVDs for sale, plus quite an extensive bookstall for such a confined space. Very pleasant café with a surprisingly varied menu. Lovely volunteer staff. Their running steam train arrived which was over half full, though I would book ahead. This was what I'd come to see. I didn't take a trip; I'm staying nearby, surrounded by beautiful countryside so you can't be disappointed, I'd have thought. Went for a drive through the village which is beautiful, once past the modern suburbs. It is a twenty minute walk for those who can. Parking was free at the station.

A FANTASTIC trip. Our 3yr old couldn't get enough of it! TBH we planned the trip based on a toddler and 3mth old. Starting at Toddington return seemed the best bet so we could get back in time for lunch at the whistle stop cafe on the platform (with a packed lunch as well just in case!). Cheltenham has baby change facilities and approx 30min turn around time for the train so perfect time to stretch the legs and change a nappy. Heading back we had the option of jumping off at Toddingham but everything was going so well we headed on down to Broadway! We checked out the train while it was turning around st Broadway then headed back to Toddington for coffee and cake at whistle stop cafe and the toddler had great fun in the play area. All in all a brilliant trip!! Just to note the website does say you can buy food on the train, you couldn't on ours and it said you could only buy at the stations. But this really was the highlight of our entire holiday!! Thanks so much to all the volunteers that make it such an amazing experience! You may see us back for the Santa Express at Christmas!!
