I was an active competition sea angler and I did my very first dive here in 1981, through a shoal of silvery sand eels, back and to as my bubbles scared them. They broke the shoal, then quickly joined again. Swimming to the bottom through the rocks, I cut off anglers broken lines of feathers and muppet type lures, to save getting hooked through my neoprene wet suit and stuffed them in my goodie bag. I watched curious pollack eyeing me from a distance and crabs scuttling back into their shelter. I was getting through my air too quick, only having a small 232 bar cylinder and being so cold, yet excited. Then I got stuck, but being fairly shallow, I had to release myself and had to dump my weight belt and check where I was when I surfaced, to go back for my belt later, which I did the following day.

Porth Ysgaden had had such an affect on me, I took novice divers for their early dives, being such an easy entry. I have it written in my will, that my ashes be scattered at Porth Ysgaden with my Samoyed dog...
Read moreThis is a great place to start a coastal path walk on this wonderful Welsh peninsular. There is parking for a few cars (free). A lot of diving clubs use this as a place to teach diving, so you will often see wetsuit clad Jacques Cousteau wannabes wondering around in summer. This coastal stretch of pathway is fantastic, and I’d recommend a walk from Ysgaden to Porth Gwyllem or Traith Penllech (turn left along the path at...

Quite a few camper vans overnight here too, again free of charge. The access road can be a bit rough though. Please respect the place though and leave no litter so others can...
