Absolute gem of a place to stroll and let your imagination wander - especially when you’re blessed with meeting Gareth, a local with encyclopaedic knowledge of the local (and wider!) heritage… his son is an archeologist who realised the castle is based on a glacial feature, likely an Iron Age fort… Harold Bluetooth, Viking overlord, claimed it for the Danes… fascinating involvement with coppicing and reintroducing indigenous animals, such as the red squirrel and pine martens… a wonderful example of locals getting involved with their heritage and reclaiming it for us all - beautiful meander down to the beach and back - well worth a visit if you like history / appreciate the countryside…. Not far from Beaumaris, and well worth an afternoon walk… would love to return and join in with the coppicing!

Having read about Castell Aberlleiniog in a book by Simon McCleave, while we were staying near Beaumaris, we we decided to visit the Castell, an ancient Mott and Bailey castle nearby. The original building was Norman, in the 11th century. It has been restored twice since then, albeit only partially during the latest so that it shows the history without "spoiling" the story. We loved it. Park further along the road where there is a free car park on the shore and walk back a short way on the road to a good pathway which goes all the way to the castle (keep to the right when you see a split in the path, up the wooden pathway, and keep to the right until you see the castle sign on the left with steps up to the castle.

A hidden away castle little known because of its big brother down the road but this one is free to explore ! It’s not huge and there’s not a lot of it, but if you enjoy a moderate woodland walk in pleasant surroundings, then this is ideal. Best place to park is Llieniog Beach picnic car park, or if you’re lucky there is a larger lay-by just before the car park entrance. The walking route is an approx 2km moderate round trip, ideal for dogs and all the family. Note that once out of the car park you’ll have to walk a few yards up the main road to access the path, the road is narrow and difficult to see around, caution should be taken.

This 11th Century Norman motte and bailey castle remains is such a lovely place to visit on the right day. My Wife and I went for a walk to the remains a few days ago and the walk to the castle itself was glorious, with the late Winter sun bleeding through the swampy undergrowth as we made our way carefully to the wooden walkway to the castle stopping to listen to robins singing and watching them and red squirrels (they don't hibernate) and woodpeckers and rabbits all enjoying the sunshine as much as we were. I said carefully as the pathway can be a little muddy before you reach the wooden walkway so walking boots are an advisory.. I implore that before walking the last section of the walkway to walk up to the castle you stop and read the two information boards either side of the entrance to the last walkway as the history of this castle is quite fascinating. My Wife and I were lucky to get the entire castle ruins to ourselves on our visit so I was able to take lots of photos and videos here. It truly is a very enjoyable place. It was restored from 2007 to 2008 as it was in a sorry state before then and was falling apart and was quite unsafe so to see it now is truly wonderful. There is car parking in Llangoed or the beach car park on the beach front. This place is well...
