To really get anything out of this fascinating site I feel it is better to learn about it's past first as it could be underwhelming otherwise?. This prehistoric site is approximately 4500 years old and consists of a circular (incomplete) grass covered bank of clay and gravel. It's use over the years is still open to debate but it may originally have been a religious sanctuary and then as time passed it may have been used as some kind of henge monument. Evidence exists that points to it being fortified during later Roman times. Recent evidence and finds point to the site possibly have been used primarily as a settlement during it's early years hence the uncertainty. The thing that struck me on my visit was the magnificent almost artistic recently cut grass which showed neat spiral patterns that really amplified the shape and undulations of the site. It really was the work of a very skilled person with sensitive direction. Parking is minimal in the lay-by at the site entrance but please do not block the road route down to the nearby working farm in any way please. Vehicles are not permitted past the small lay-by area so a pleasant 300 metre walk is needed. This site is free and very well maintained...
Read moreGreat fun. Not much here but the hill the castle once stood on, but a fab few minutes walking up the path and playing with the boys. One feel in love with the cows there.
Just stop...
Read moreJust grassy banks left now but very atmospheric. Made me stand and think who was living here...
