The stories surrounding this small cave are really what make it. If you visit Waverley Abbey then I'd suggest spending another 20 minutes or so visiting this cave (short 5-10 minute walk from the Abbey carpark. Follow the footpath sign and slide left past the houses). The spring is still flowing out of the cave after all these years.....

Loads of history and myth surrounding the cave.I remember 20 odd years ago it was open and you could go in and explore but as usual health and safty comes first...Not a lot to see really....Nice little walk though on the rest of the heritage trail....plus we parked at waverley abbey and strolled up here as theres no parking 😁

This could be so interesting. The ceiling collapsed so the local authority has simply stuck a gate across it, instead of putting a bit of effort in. Tbh, hardly worth visiting, it's just a muddy hole in the wall, with a grid across the front. Even the information board is so badly aged, it's almost unreadable. A real shame

Mother Ludlam’s Cave Is A Unique Location. It Is Quite Challenging To Find (You Have To Walk Up Someone’s Driveway To Get To It!) However There Is A Footpath Sign By The Road Guiding You To It. The Driveway Turns Into A Path And Follow If For About 450 Feet/140 Meters And You Will Find The Cave On Your Right. There Is A Sign Telling You About The Caves And It’s Myths & Legends. The Cave Itself You Cannot Go In But You Can Look Through The Gate. There Is An Active Spring Which Runs Out From The Cave Down To The River Way. Recommend Visiting But...

This used to be a local tourist attraction two hundred years ago, but became neglected and unsavoury in the latter half of the last century. It's a sandstone cave containing a spring of water. Because of possible roof falls and to protect resident bats it now has a railing grille preventing access. The water is...
