The local poet Paul Mann wrote these words in his poem - The Ballad of Bellever Tor. The first verse goes: "Bellever Tor is a helluva tor, It’s a rip-snortin’, ca-vortin’ swell-of-a-tor. And if, as I live, I heard tell-of-a-tor The words I inferred would be “Bellever Tor”. Bellever Tor is often called the centre of Dartmoor and while the Path to the top of the Tor is steep it is worth the effort to get up there as the Tor is an amazing piece of geology as well as being the centre point of the Moor. No wonder so many spooky stories are written about these parts when these odd landscape features are so common. It is well worth the effort to climb the Tor to get the views across the Moor.

A small car park, then through a gate leading to a large gravel track going uphill. Towards the top of the hill the path forks giving you various options. Most of the paths in the woods are light gravel so could be passable with a buggy with inflated tyres but if you have a child you may want a baby carrier (rucksack). The path to the tor itself from the woods is not buggy friendly at all. Some great views across Dartmoor from the tor. The woods have a few main trails with other paths off of them eg a river walk. A really nice place for a walk.

Impressive in size, with a dramatic approach from the north this is a stunning natural wonder. Too bad that the Victorians insisted on putting their mark on top of it with some sort of show off stumpy pillar, but other than that this is a must see when in Dartmoor. Also, make sure to explore the surrounding fields and woods – lots of ancient stone circles and remains of settlements.
