It's a tall carved stone in a field! It's very ancient and no one really knows its history or purpose. Something that would be lovely to come across on a countryside walk as an aside, but as it's on private land, with access, you have to make the effort to go and see it. So not really worth the time unless you're big into your historic monuments.

Hauntingly beautiful and massively under-rated as a very significant cross, especially this far west. It's similar to some Mercian crosses, and absolutely fascinating. It stands there so full of history and religious significance. We don't know how lucky we are that these dark age remains exist alongside our modern world. Wonderful.

11 feet high, early standing cross dating to about the 10th century - probably! The shaft is covered with interlaced designs that show a strong Viking influence. It’s in remarkable condition for something that’s a thousand years old and unprotected from the elements. There’s space for a few cars to park close by.

This is a lovely piece of north Wales history go have a look for yourself.

This 12ft high stone monolith with carvings on its shaft similar to Celtic and Viking styles is one of Flintshire’s most impressive ancient monuments and is believed to be the tallest wheelcross in Britain.

Historians have never been able to determine why or when the stone was erected although it is generally thought to have been erected around 1000 A.D. as a Lamentation Stone

This impressive stone cross is located near the village of Whitford some three miles west of Holywell and stands near a crossroads between that village and the...
