Did not realize this park is not open to anyone who doesn't live in Abington. Unfortunately being Mt. Airy residents who happened to be passing through on a beautiful day after a local doctor's appointment, my two young children and I were not welcome to play here. Seems antithetical to the spirit of parks...but I suppose good for Abington residents who only desire other Abington residents to share a slice of sky with?
We were greeted (a generous term) by a gentleman (an even more generous term) at the front gate and instead of having this odd Grinch-written policy presented and explained with an ounce of kindness to two confused kids and their mom...the gentleman spoke to us in a nasty, aggressive, hostile manner and stared daggers at us until he confirmed we turned around and left his most assiduously protected territory. Bark bark! What a good guard dog. His Abington masters will be pleased to know they have such a good boy looking out for them to keep out the Mt. Airy bred rapscallions.
So if you're in Abington but happen to not live in Abington and your children would like to be so bold as to swing on a swing, look at a tree, or make a new friend...I can highly recommend Ethel Jordan Park at 347 Cadwalder Avenue. It's just a few minutes down the road from the kingdom of Alverthrope. The sky is just as blue, the few pieces of litter spotted were promptly collected and disposed of by my two community minded and kind children, and most importantly the people also playing here have warm smiles on their faces...being at a playground on a beautiful...
Read moreA friend of ours told us about the Alverthorpe Park. We were told that you had to live in the area in order to attend the private park, which we did. I thought that was odd as it is still technically a public park. Upon arriving at the park, a white older guy stop us at the gate. He asked to see our drivers license or proof that we live in the area. My husband showed him. He then moved Toward the back of our 2021 BMW SUV and looked in the back of our car where our children were sitting. He literally starred at them for a good 30 seconds, which creeped us all out. My husband asked him why was in looking in our car. He said oh just checking to make sure there was no dogs. I felt like he didn’t really want our Black selves there. I never felt so bad. He wasn’t friendly. We live in 2022. Why is this even happening. I suggest if you live here or give money to the Abington township, I suggest not. It still feels very Racist and unwelcoming. This isn’t t the first place I felt this way in the Abington township. I suggest go to a free nice park where you don’t have to be questioned or interrogated in order to have a fun time with...
Read moreI live 4 mins from this place so I submitted an application. The person in charge of them wasn’t in for a few weeks so when he finally was I had to keep calling every single week for more than 5 weeks just for me to call back again and be told that I live on the “wrong side of town”. What I don’t understand is why they couldn’t tell me that sooner or better yet when I flat out asked them about my address being accepted when I filled out the application in front of them. Overall waste of my time. Also if they say you will get a “call back” don’t trust it because they only have 1 person in charge of that and he’s always on some sort of break so he’s hard to get a hold off, won’t return voicemail messages, and will never call back because I had to keep calling. Why is this even a community location if it’s gonna exclude the rest of the community...
