Plainsdale Mine and Shaft is an absolute gem in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! We stumbled upon this incredible site while diving into the history of the Keweenaw Peninsula through our own research, and it was a highlight of our trip. The tour was outstanding—our guide was engaging, full of knowledge, and brought the region’s mining past to life with fascinating stories. We explored the iconic shaft and rock-house, which gave us a vivid sense of the miners’ lives and the operations that defined this area. The entire site, with its collection of historic buildings, paints a powerful picture of the Keweenaw’s mining legacy. I learned so much, and the experience was both educational and inspiring. Plainsdale Mine and Shaft is beautifully preserved, with a clear passion for sharing this history. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting the Upper...
Read moreWe loved everything about this place. Kurt was our tour guide. We visited on a Sunday and didn't expect to get a tour outside of normal hours. It was a great surprise. He was so incredibly kind and knowledgeable. The number of artifacts housed here is so impressive. The organization is doing a fantastic job of preserving Michigan history. You should 100% go visit, sign the guest book, and help support them in any way possible. I am disabled and found the site more accessible than most other UP locations. The stairs down to the stone building are the only barrier to a wheelchair that I noticed. They have a little gift shop with some great local rock specimens that were crafted locally (not purchased online and resold like other places)
Definitely stop here. It's...

On our way back home I put this location into our gps to stop by and walk around as we would not be in the area on Saturday when they have tours. While walking around the site, a volunteer pulled up for other reasons, but briefly opened the door to take a peek and talked a little about the history and their preservation efforts. We also found that a memorial plaque is going to be put outside the mine honoring the people that died there. Great history,...
