Do you ever wonder how people who go on to do great things were raised—and where they lived? It’s such an interesting question.  In my quest to answer this, I explored the birthplace of Susan B Anthony, one of the most influential women in the American women’s rights movement. What a fascinating visit! #berkshires #suffragestartshere #womenshistory #historichomes #adamsmassachusetts #daytrip Follow me @travelingmcridges if you like to dine and shop small while visiting Main Streets, Historic Places and Nature Preserves. We are in the Hudson Valley of New York most of the year, on the Space Coast of Florida during the winter, and beyond from time to time.

Susan Anthony was/is a seminal character in American history and universal human rights. Were it not for her and her contemporaries American women could still be ruled by a patriarchal conservative, Right-wing mentality. This museum is significant in that it tells this story of women struggling to attain the same rights as men had. One of the disappointing things about the museum, however, is the anti-abortion, anti-choice (pro-life) stance the owner and trustees of the museum take in discussing the early women's movement. They clearly imply through their displays that most women in Susan's time were pro-life, anti-choice about pregnancy. This simply was not, and is not today, the case. Most women then and now want access to contraception, and safe and legal medical abortion services if they choose this option. In short, it is a woman's body and it is their choice. The museum needs to present a balanced view of this issue if they are going to address the topic. Otherwise, they are engaging in propaganda. When you investigate the owner of the museum, Carol Crossed, you find she is an anti-choice (pro-life activist). This can easily make one conclude that she is using the legacy of Susan B Anthony to make it appear that women in that time were unanimously opposed to abortion. Thus simply is not the case and the museum comes across as dishonest for trying to connect the two together. We suggest you go to this museum, but be cognizant of the conservative view regarding whether women have the human right to control their bodies as they choose.

Awesome museum 👏 Visiting the birthplace of Susan B Anthony was incredible. The home was very well done in presenting all about Susan. We got a wonderful tour from Marty, who knows all about her, the home, her family, and the artifacts in the museum. Thank you to the museum for everything. Keep up the great work 👍.

Carol Crossed is a major Right to Life operative. She also owns the Harriet Tubman house. Hmm. Look at the staff. Right to lifers! Carol bought these two women’s birthplaces to begin to slowly change history. To, over time, slowly craft shows and exhibits that purport that Susan B Anthony and Harriet Tubman were also “right to lifers” and that they did Not Defend a women’s right to choose! The Official Susan B Anthony museum in Rochester, will have nothing to do with Carol Crossed...
