Or, stop by the viewing pavilion at the edge of an extensive panorama of open meadow and farm fields. Without binoculars, the distant lake at which the flocks of huge white Canada geese rest during their autumn route from Quebec through Vermont to Delaware for the winter.
Although unusual at mid-day, we were fortunate to observe from the pavilion a large flock of these geese fly against the sunlit blue sky. They coursed to the west off in the distance. Beneath their formation in the far western panorama past Lake Champlain were the Adirondack foothills..
Their misshapen V-form circled back to the east on route to the small lake not visible to us. As they banked back, the angle of their flight in the sun fired the gleam of their whiteness, all the more so because of the cloudless blue, back to our unaided observation.
Their shoddy V streamed back toward their lake destination, circled over it, and, like a disappearing bed, descended delicately below our sight line onto the lake. Their well choreographed course rested them on their night's refuge, far from eyes, noise and intrusive...
