Pretty disappointed honestly. Showed up unsure of if I’d want to do the tour (considering I understand the importance of knowing the history but feel strongly about being respectful of a space in which human beings were abused for decades), and was going to base that decision off of first impressions (I only wanted to do the tour if the history was told as it is, and not misconstrued).
Immediately knew the answer would be no when I ent the Visitor’s Center and began reading about the family. One of the signs giving information about a wife of one of the owners describes her “suffering and sacrifices” and such, yet hardly gives any information about the true suffering of those enslaved. Then, next to that, there is a whole STATUE of the ‘man’ who heavily fought for slavery throughout his entire political career, his display talking all about how his “success.”
I am simply appalled. I can only hope the actual house and tour itself gives better commentary on the history, and thoroughly explains the horrible things that “successful” politician did.
No person that literally owned other people deserves a statue of his face displayed in the very place that his terror took place.
Not saying don’t talk about him, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to do it. Do better.
But hey—at least the bathrooms were clean and the...
Read moreRedcliffe Plantation is located in Beech Island, SC. Its sits on almost 400 acres of land, its one of the smaller ones in the area. I will be doing more research so I can visit the other plantations in the area. make sure you go inside the visitor center first even if you don't do a tour, clean bathrooms, alot reading information and a gift shop. The park rangers will give you some tips on how to spend your time.
This place is a beautiful architectural beauty with alot of history. The grounds are well kept, clean, and has alot of space to spend the entire day if you desire. All the knowledgeable historians/ park rangers do a fantastic job of explaining the past. There is no charge to roam the park, the tours are a small fee. I volunteer with HC so I was attending a mthly group trip. The the tour is indeed worth the money and time. They also do a rooftop tour that is only available twice a yr. I will be going back for that part of the tour this yr hopefully. There website has more info about tours and prices.
Visiting historic houses and learning history is one of my favorite things to do yearly. I didn't get a chance to walk any of the trails, maybe next time. Lots of free...
Read moreMy friend and I visited Redcliffe Plantation during some sort of open house day so we cannot directly speak about the "normal" tour. However, the experience we had during our stay was very informative and we learned a lot. To write that we enjoyed our experience would be distasteful regarding the history of that place, but the 5 hours we spent there went by with the blink of an eye. The way everything was presented and also the information the rangers provided enabled us to learn a lot about slavery in the US and the history of this place. A special thank you at this point to Gregory and Jordan for answering all our questions and the great conversations that emerged from there! I feel really sorry for the people commenting that they never went to see the actual place after making up their mind 5 minutes after visiting the visitor center, because they missed out on a great opportunity. Redcliffe Plantation does not hold back at any point in showing the atrocities of slavery and what awful people Hammond and his family were. His diaries are also presented at the Plantation which provides the opportunity to read about his inhumane mindset. A full history is provided at Redcliffe without any...
