I'm conflicted about writing this review, but I think it's worth leaving for anyone outside of their install zone (as we were). To be fair, the quality of the finished product is great. It's made of solid wood and feels made to withstand years of usage. The people at LHC are super nice, and despite all the problems we had, they did their very best to make things right.
We placed our order for a Full-Size British-Brace Murphy bed with two 18-inch side cabinets (with bottom doors) and a custom white paint color on November 8th, 2024. Our set was finished around December 27th, 2024. Due to some miscommunication with their freight carrier, the carrier didn't pick it up until around January 20th, 2025, and then sent it to us on January 27th. One bed panel arrived damaged, and the carrier returned it. Add to that, the carrier didn't actually pick up ALL the pieces, so we were missing the shelves for the side cabinets. LHC re-made the damaged piece and shipped it (with the missing pieces), and they arrived on March 3rd. Unfortunately, the metal braces they sent were drilled incorrectly so when I started bulding the bed the screws went through the front of the panel. I notified LHC, who again remade the bed panel and sent updated metal braces, which arrived on April 8th. I restarted the build, only to find that once I got the bed mostly built, the new panel they sent didn't have the custom paint color and didn't match any of the other pieces. It also wasn't pre-drilled for the handle. I had to disassemble the entire thing again, and LHC re-made both panels for the bed and sent them again, arriving early June. As mentioned before, LHC was easy to work with and accepted responsibility to correct the mistakes caused by their fabricators and freight carrier. Nonetheless, the rework and multiple waiting periods were a frustrating experience that made this project take six months from order to completion.
If you are outside of their installation area, I would caution you that I found the build process somewhat difficult. Here are a few things to look out for:
I don't write very many internet reviews, but I am making an exception for Landcaster Handcraft. I don't think I have ever been as pleased with any purchase I have made for my home in my entire life as I am with our custom Murphy bed from Lancaster Handcraft. We bought a queen bed with custom 32-inch side units that match the height of the bed, cherry, mission style, natural finish. We absolutely love it, and it solves so many space issues for us! We drove out to Salunga to see the showroom and meet with Andrew in person to talk about customization, but if you can't make it out there and you're worried about buying a Murphy bed without seeing one in person, don't be. The quality will exceed your expectations. We live in a NYC coop with insane rules and an inexperienced property manager who was a bit challenging to work with at first, and Hilary and Andrew bent over backward to work with the building and get them the paperwork they needed. When the installers came, they were friendly, polite, and professional, and they dealt with the building's difficult plaster-over-masonry walls with patience and skill. We had gotten conflicting information from the building staff about how the 11-foot crown moulding piece could be brought up to our apartment, since it would not fit in the elevator. Unfortunately, there turned out to be no easy way to get it up, so Nathan and Maurice carried it up 15 flights of stairs without complaint. The bed is gorgeous, extremely well-made, and works perfectly. I could not be more thrilled with the bed itself or the experience of buying it. Absolutely well...
Read moreI concur with the reviewer who noted the difficulty in installing this Murphy bed. We initially purchased it with installation included, but before the bed was available, we were informed that they no longer will provide an installer, even locally. We were reimbursed for the installation fee and assured that the installation would be straightforward, accompanied by written and video instructions. Wrong! Several experienced contractors were unable to install the bed correctly, and some bed parts were damaged in the process. Although the store provided replacement parts (at an additional cost), and we repaired some others, the installation was delayed and ultimately required three visits and many hours of labor by another contractor. The ultimate product is beautiful and well-constructed, but be prepared for potential...
