The Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve is a hidden gem in Alabama, offering a peaceful and immersive experience in nature. Located near Montevallo, this unique wetland is home to a diverse range of plant and animal life, making it a must-visit for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to escape into a tranquil, untouched environment.
One of the standout features of the preserve is its well-maintained boardwalk, which allows visitors to safely explore the swamp while providing excellent vantage points for observing the rich ecosystem. Towering cypress and tupelo trees draped in Spanish moss create a breathtaking, almost mystical atmosphere, especially in the early morning light or during golden hour. The reflections in the still, dark waters add to the beauty, making it a dream location for photographers.
Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunity to see a variety of birds, amphibians, and even the occasional beaver or otter. The preserve is a fantastic place for birdwatching, with species like great blue herons, woodpeckers, and barred owls often making an appearance.
What makes Ebenezer Swamp truly special is its sense of solitude and serenity. Unlike crowded state parks or tourist-heavy nature spots, this preserve offers a quiet, undisturbed retreat where visitors can connect with nature without distraction.
Whether you're a hiker, a photographer, or simply someone who enjoys a peaceful walk in the woods, Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve is a destination well worth visiting. It's a reminder of the natural beauty that thrives in Alabama and the importance of protecting these valuable ecosystems for future generations. Highly...
Read moreBeautiful swamp area in alabaster/montevallo. Near untouched and natural as it gets. The local University has done a fantastic job building the boardwalk winding through the swamp. And continue to do a great job keep it maintained. There are onsite bathrooms. Which seem randomly locked or unlocked. But makes sense as there is no one stationed at any given time to watch over the place.
It's an easy trek. Flat. No hiking boots needed. Possibly even wheelchair accessible after a quick push through some grass and a short gravel trail before the boardwalk starts.
I've seen plenty of wildlife here. Racoons, deer, owls, beavers, fish, crayfish, and snakes. Fear not the snakes, it is their home you're in, they're more terrified of you than you realize, plus you're on an elevated boardwalk out of their way.
The water levels can vary depending on how much rain the state has been having, as this is a watershed off of the cahaba River.
Beautiful place. Of you've never been and are in the area, you can bang out a quick tour in 30 minutes if you want. Or take it easy and draw it out. But definitely worth the stop for any...
Read moreThis a great little preserve close to Montevallo. The university has done a good job with the information that is presented and maintaining the boardwalk. You only need maybe an hour, but our family has visited three times this year and see something new each time. If the kids are quiet, the wildlife is around you from snakes, beavers, fish and of course insects. And even it they aren't the animals may stick around.
One thing to be aware of, poison ivy can get bad on the edges of the trail in the woods. Once you are in the swamp area on the boardwalk, it is not a problem. But at the entrance to the trail in the woods, watch out...
