My husband and I bought our new to us camper this year. Our first time as campers owning our own was this past Labor Day weekend 2024. Shakedown was successful as we had a blast! Just not long enough 😭 The spot we reserved was rented to a long term renter; so we did not get the river view but it still was a great site. I did not experience the bathhouse/restrooms but hear they are extremely clean. They have boat slots for ”campers only” that you can leave your boat tied up during your stay. We took advantage of it during the day but brought it back to our site during the night. There is a table for each site except the site beside us; we shared that table. No big deal since we never were on the same schedule. Price is reasonable. There is a swimming area; we did not experience it but it did look clean. They have an ice vending machine. It’s $4 a bag/card only. I felt that is reasonable as it would cost you that much or more to go to the nearest store. There’s a nice playground for all kids of ages 😂 No wifi. Hotspot only or whatever wifi system you have. No laundry facilities. Golf carts are welcome. Pet friendly. Easy check in and check out. Management comes around a day or so after you are there for payment. Unless you need them, they leave you to your privacy. No drama. No hassle. There are lots of long term renters so most of the water view spots are taken. Fair warning if you are expecting water view. Overall, I would recommend Higgins Ferry Park for camping...
Read moreWhile the staff was super nice and friendly the two choices I was offered for one night passing thru were HORRIBLE! I called ahead and asked if anything was available for one night as I'm passing thru and did NOT want to unhook, was told yes. They met us in side by side and proceeded to take us to the top of a small hill and pointed to two pads up there that not only are slopping down but also canted to the right and not wide enough, they look like they were poured in 1970 and tiny. It took me 15 minutes just to get both sides of my tires on the pad after dodging tree stumps and full timers vehicles in the way and even then some of my tread was hanging off WE LEFT...Never again!
I say all this simply to warn other campers (just passing thru) as I have nothing against the staff as they tried but these two spots were horrible, even if I had leveled one side of my camper if we had remained hooked the front of my camper would have had far too much pitch up if we had remained hooked up which was the point. Lots of other spots around but from the look they were taken up by full timers that appear to either live or at least leave campers here year around. Wasted 12 minutes in to reach this place, 20 minutes TRYING to maneuver my camper on this horrible pad and then another 12 minutes back to interstate. Drove another 50 minutes N and stayed at Birmingham RV South, $8 more per night but in a spot...
Read moreThe park is becoming a more family friendly campground with events monthly for children and get to know gatherings, potluck in the pavilion. Also the park is being restored. There are now 5 primitive camp sites. The free boat launch on Lake Mitchell is a definite plus, along with a playground for the kids. Call ahead and let Ranger Giles know your coming. He or his wife Kathy if possible will greet you and assist you in getting to your site. If you haven't been to Higgins Ferry Park lately you're missing a great time. The sites are being repaired and the Park is improving almost daily. Also County Road 28, Lake Mitchell road was just widened and repaved. Make sure to call ahead for availability as Campsite usage is vastly increasing. Thanks Donald and Kathy...
