It's an old railroad bridge! It doesn't quite go to the other side. It would probably be a mistake to try to take a train across it. It's a nice walk though.

Sorry I didn't take a photo, let me paint you a picture! Imagine walking from your car in a small parking lot in Alabama. You've just shut your vehicle off, so of course, you're already sweating. You walk to a shaded area covered by the tree canopy. You walk for another two to three minutes. Where you will come across a walking bridge approximately 25-30 feet under train tracks. You walk in the heat of the Alabama afternoon sun, blocked out every foot or two by the train tracks above. It seems like you've been in this heat for hours. It's been ten minutes. You're still not to the end of the bridge. Another ten minutes pass, you can see the end. Just a few more minutes you'll be at the other side... or almost to the other side. There is however a "panty tree" there. So it's got that going for it, which is nice.

Overall it's a nice walk. It's a nice view. The tree is the fault of high school and college kids. Theres also a small hiking trail at the start or the bridge. I'll let you know what thays like next time. Now you just ha e to walk back to the car. Remember, the car has the air conditioning....

The Old Railroad Bridge is a beautifully preserved historical landmark in Lauderdale County. The Old Railroad Bridge has lots of history behind it. The bridge not only carried railroads on the top, but also had a lower deck for other traffic. This closed in 1939 with the opening of the O'Neal Bridge.

The surviving 1560-foot long lower deck has been restored to serve as a walking trail. With the original piers a part of the present structure, it is the oldest river bridge in Alabama. There's a newly added Restroom available on site just before reaching the bridge along with access to TVA walking trails. The Old Railroad Bridge is a peaceful and quiet place to take a relaxing stroll, enjoy fresh air, and take advantage of some cool photo ops! There's nice views of the Tennessee River, O'Neal Bridge, The Dam, Renaissance Tower, etc. The wood boards have been replaced and you feel sturdy and secure. If you walk to the end you'll get to see the infamous...

"Breathtaking Sunset and Blood Moon at The Old Railroad Bridge"

I recently experienced one of the most beautiful nights of my life at The Old Railroad Bridge in the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area. Watching the sunset from the bridge was absolutely mesmerizing, with the sky painted in stunning hues of orange and pink. As night fell, the view became even more magical with the rare sight of the blood moon hanging over the river. The combination of natural beauty and the historic charm of the bridge made it an unforgettable experience.

The surrounding park is also fantastic, providing a peaceful, scenic spot perfect for unwinding and connecting with nature. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend visiting this iconic location, especially at sunset—it’s a moment you’ll...

This bridge takes you half way across the river, but there's actually no way to cross the Tennessee River as a pedestrian without walking on a highway (with no sidewalk for pedestrians) for hundreds of miles. This bridge is the oldest river bridge in Alabama (built in 1830 to be a toll bridge). All before 1900 it was taken out by a tornado, burned down by confederate soldiers, and run into by a steamboat. After the many reconstructions, the bridge remained active for trains to cross the river until 1988 ... but I can't seem to find out when it was finally partially dismantled and when you could no longer cross the full width of the river.

This bridge is over the waters of the Tennessee River in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Looking across the river you can see barges going up and down the river. You can also see McFarland Park. The bridge doesn't have seating, but it's beautiful none the less. There are underclothes in the bushes that locals call "the panty tree". I was told by other visitors that there was more before recent floods washed them away.
