Chugach State Park is a stunning natural expanse surrounding Anchorage, encompassing over 495,000 acres of rugged mountains, glaciers, alpine lakes, and dense forests. Its proximity to the city makes it both accessible and wild, offering photographers and outdoor enthusiasts a chance to experience Alaska’s dramatic landscapes without venturing deep into remote backcountry.

The park’s trails cater to all levels, from short scenic hikes to challenging climbs such as Flattop Mountain, which rewards visitors with sweeping panoramas of Anchorage, Turnagain Arm, and the surrounding Chugach Range. Lakes and rivers throughout the park provide reflections of snow-capped peaks, creating spectacular compositions for landscape photography.

Wildlife abounds, including moose, bears, eagles, and mountain goats, giving photographers opportunities for wildlife shots in a natural setting.

Seasonal changes dramatically transform the park: winter blankets the peaks and trails in snow, summer brings vibrant wildflowers and verdant forests, and autumn paints the valleys in rich golds and reds.

Great access, nominal fees, walking and biking trails, mountain paths, and warnings about wildlife safety precautions. Ensure you have fuel, food, water, first aid supplies, and warning triangles/flares, and other essentials as you travel these somewhat isolated areas. Lots of people pulled off the highway to take a hike. I saw a mom biking with her baby in a safety seat. ALASKA DISCOVERIES: WAIT FOR YOUR TRAVEL BUDDIES WHEN POSSIBLE. Gorgeous. Breathtakingly beautiful. An impromptu decision to thank God for life and the opportunity to discover a rare and natural wonder known as Alaska. Grandeur this rare is often better when shared. Besides, the ability to navigate picturesque moments as you drive is delightful with another set of hands and eyes. Imagine a drive thru Coffee Haus in a remote part of the wilderness where moose and bear were seen. They roam free. “Oh Beautiful” (song). Enjoy the photographs: as seen thru my eyes – Robbye Thomas wishes you safe travels, love, and abundance wherever you travel...

They're aren't to many places in the world where you can driving down the road and pull off one of the multiple scenic turn offs to see Beluga whales right from your vehicle! I definitely wasn't expecting to have such an opportunity! Outside of seeing Belugas, I hear this is also a very common spot to see Mountain Goats and Dall Sheep, although we weren't lucky enough to see then as well. The landscape is also very beautiful with mountains all around and coming right up to the road. The only thing I warn is that it is a very well-traveled road and people can sometimes pull off or back onto the road, so just be sure to travel with caution, maybe with a buddy or two so they can tell you when they see something cool and where the safe places to check them out are. I hope we get to go...
