Not as bad as I read. I drove from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle and back. Its essentially a dirt road with pavement every once in a great while. There were only a few places were the pot holes were bad. I was able to drive about 60mph the while way to the Arctic Circle except for some of the turns and there are signs that say go x mph. If you drive a rental on here I HIGHLY recommend getting the windshield waiver. A semi went flying past us and sprayed the rental with rocks and chipped the windshield. I had the windshield waiver so I was all good. Also have a least one if not two spare tires. I would also recommend taking a 5gallon gas can.    Read moreThe term "Highway" is very misleading. This road is basically 500 miles of dirt road with a few as not asphalt patches. This is not a road for a nice "road trip". The road is in rough condition. There are no services after you leave Hilltop to speak of until you get to Coldfoot - 250 miles up the road. It's dangerous and there is heavy truck traffic. If you're going to see wildlife, go to Denali. If you're going to the Arctic Circle - Google it. It is literally just a sign an outhouse. Expect rock chips to your vehicle and windshield.
