In 1964 there were 5 minutes of terror for the area residents as a massive earthquake shook a large area, liquifying the clay soil into an undulating mass of destruction, including many houses that swept into the new crevasse and disappeared forever. The land sunk down about 8 feet, and the entire area is now parkland, with the soil re-solidified still with the wave action preserved. A massive wave of water followed, about 28ft tall and destroyed much of the coastland developments for many miles around. You can access the park by private car, or take a tour there to hear more details recouned by locals.

Part of the Coastal Trail in Anchorage, very interesting points of interest explaining some of the impacts of the big quake of which so many have either forgotten or are ignorant. Amazing changes to the shoreline almost seems as if it's changing as you walk thru it. The trail is great, well-maintained (no restrooms on this almost 5 km stretch), great views of the bay and channel, city skyline, various neighborhoods. We walked from the Earthquake Park to downtown and lunched at Humpy's Grill (really good!!). Walk, jog, bike, or hike the Trail - you'll be glad you did!

This was one of the places we really wanted to visit in Anchorage. However, there is not a place that detailed what happened on that Good Friday in 1964. The interpretation point only has a few plaques showing what occurred but no detailed recount like a museum or ranger center would provide. This interpretive point is really a viewing point of the land slide on that day. Still, it was a good experience seeing the actual site. There are a number of trails through the woods but no real explanation.

Great park along the shore between the downtown and Airport: on Clear day can see denial on a clear day: This 134-acre park is set in the woods where, in 1964, an entire neighborhood slid into the ocean during last century's most powerful earthquake. The earthquake was measured at a 9.2 on the Richter scale and lasted 4 minutes. Today, this tragic event is commemorated in Anchorage’s Earthquake Park, where you’ll find signs explaining the circumstances of the quake and its effect on the area.
