Down a long, desolate road and far removed from civilization lies Fossil Beach on Kodiak Island. What’s so unusual about this hidden beach is it is right next to the Pacific Spaceport Complex…so you can actually see the towers in the distance from the beach! When we visited, they were not in use at all (and I would assume they aren’t used too often anyway), and there wasn’t a single other person on the beach! We had it all to ourselves! It’s really a beautiful area with little pebbles dotting the entire beach - not the smooth sand you see elsewhere - and the water is COLD. We definitely didn’t try swimming in it. If you’re looking for a secluded beach that will likely have no other people, visit this place if you’re in Kodiak! It’s worth the drive to just walk around, explore, and see the wildlife! And by the way…we didn’t see any fossils. Not sure why it’s called “Fossil Beach” (I’m sure someone found one fossil a long time ago and called it that), but even despite that, it’s...

Tons of fossils everywhere. Bring a small pick or hammer and chisel and you can probably dig some out of the softer rocks. You can see the occasional surfer (the ones who are not quite ready for surfers’ beach) as well as brown bears. You drive through a rocket launch facility to get there, which makes it...
