Kenia Fjords National Park is an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone seeking to experience the breathtaking beauty of Alaska’s natural wonders. The highlight, of course, is the park’s incredible glaciers. Watching massive chunks of ice calve from the tidewater glaciers into the sea is an awe-inspiring sight that leaves a lasting impression. They boat crew even fished chunks of ice out of the water to put in our drinks and it tasted so pure.
The abundant wildlife is another reason this park is so special. During our visit, we saw sea otters, puffins, humpback whales, orcas, seals, bald eagles, and more. The diversity of marine life is extraordinary, and it's a true privilege to see these animals in their natural habitat. The starting point for the Kenai Fjords experience is Seaward in Southern Alaska. If you're flying into Alaska from one of the lower 48 states, chances are high that you'll land in Anchorage. That's what I did, a flight from Los Angeles to Anchorage, with a brief stop in Seattle. I took the coastal classic express train by Alaska railroads and reached seaward. The train journey is a treat in itself (perhaps merits a separate review of it's own).
The Kenai Fjords cruise is simply memorable. It takes roughly two and a half hours to reach the glacier, but the journey isn't simply about riding out the choppy waves. The cruise operator will own your attention span for the entire duration will outstanding commentary about wildlife. Be rest assured that you'll get a up-close and personal glimpse of all the sea-creatures that inhabit the seas from Seaward to the Kenai Fjords.
