Portage Lake — Attraction in Alaska

If you're looking for a quick paddle, a full day paddle, or a float down Portage Creek then you'll enjoy Portage Lake.

On a warm summer day with no wind I suggest a paddle to see Portage Glacier. There will be some wind coming down from the glaciers nearby, but it shouldn't make the paddle too difficult. If the wind is strong at the Begich Boggs Visitor Center then absolutely do not go out on Portage Lake. The late afternoon (3-4 PM) you may notice a change in the weather to include more clouds and wind.

This is an absolutely stunning lake to paddle. It is surrounded by mountains, with spectacular waterfalls falling right into the lake and even better, there's the beautiful Portage Glacier, though shrinking, still calves into the lake. There are some gravel beaches at the far end of the lake you can land on to take a break, take some pictures or go exploring. Fun boat ride out into the lake. Joy the captain, is a sweet and kind person. Knows how to drive the boat without you feeling like you are on a boat. The view is beautiful. The tour guide was knowledgeable about the area. The topside can be cold and breezy, but great views. The bottom of the boat is warm and no wind, but the views aren't as good as being on top.
