If you're looking for a quick paddle, a full day paddle, or a float down Portage Creek then you'll enjoy Portage Lake.
On a warm summer day with no wind I suggest a paddle to see Portage Glacier. There will be some wind coming down from the glaciers nearby, but it shouldn't make the paddle too difficult. If the wind is strong at the Begich Boggs Visitor Center then absolutely do not go out on Portage Lake. The late afternoon (3-4 PM) you may notice a change in the weather to include more clouds and wind.

It is surrounded by mountains, with spectacular waterfalls falling right into the lake and even better, there's the beautiful Portage Glacier, though shrinking, still calves into the lake.
