Just a perfect experience! I did the 3D/2N Northern Lights trip and it was just such an incredible taste of so many Alaska experiences. Sled dogs, ice fishing, northern lights, all incredible! As much as all of those things were bucket list items, the staff at Snowhook are what really made the trip so special!
From the warm welcome in the office before the first day of dogsledding, I knew I had made an excellent choice to kick off my Alaskan adventure. Lindsey was a great guide for the dogsledding and it was so much fun learning about what brought the staff to Alaska, and what makes Snowhook a special place to them. The only downside of dogsledding is you have to stop petting and loving on the dogs for a second to actually do the mushing. But the property is beautiful, especially with the new snow. It was cool to learn how many little family units all make up the bigger Snowhook family.
Ice fishing with Ryan was great! He is so knowledgeable to getting to spend time with people who are willing to teach you about their passions is such a fantastic experience. There is no way I would have caught a fish if Ryan didnโt direct me right onto it, and getting to cook that thing up for breakfast the next morning was a special treat.
An unexpected highlight was getting some time with Justin on our first night where he shared some stories about running the Iditarod, and getting to learn what he loves most about Alaska and the dogs.
The unquestioned highlight of the trip was Jeff! Jeff stayed with us in the cabins and was our snowmachine and northern lights guide. He had an infectious excitement for the northern lights and got us some fantastic shots. Most importantly he has a wealth of knowledge from his time guiding across the U.S. and he was so willing to share, and was very easy to talk to. Even after I left for Fairbanks Jeff was sending tips on best places to view aurora for the remainder of my trip.
The cabins and lodge far exceeded my expectations. Everything was brand new and perfect. Such a gorgeous setting as well. Iโm certainly hoping to make a return trip, and would love to do a longer stay with extended dog sledding time. When I drove away from Snowhook, it was only 3 days into my 10 day Alaska adventure, but I was sad because I had a strong feeling that the trip had peaked. I canโt recommend them enough!
PS- Let me know when you add branded dog jackets to the Merch! My...
ย ย ย Read moreThis past August, my husband and I took our very first trip to BEAUTIFUL Alaska! For the week we were there, we went to as many places as we could to experience as much as possible during our stay. A highlight of our trip was the tour we took at SNOWHOOK Adventures. We are huge dog lovers and couldnโt wait to have a firsthand experience of the true work that sled dogs perform and learn about the historic Iditarod Race. The tour introduction that Jeremy gave was informative, personable & funny. Jeremy answered all kinds of questions he was asked. He provided wonderful insight and history about how the true Alaskan sled dog has developed over time, into its own special breed. As a working breed, he also shared the important role Alaskan sled dogs have served in the wilderness, for generations.
An incredible part of the adventure was the opportunity to meet ALL the sled dogs one on one. There were over 70 there and we could see the love and care each one is given. What incredible, smart ,personable & affectionate dogs. We could have loved up on them all day! We experienced the sled dogsโ summer training when we climbed up into an offroad vehicle driven by our guide Matt, who took us out on the back trails the dogs train on in the summer. Matt was such a pleasure to be with, answering so many questions we had along the way and we could truly see the affection and care he has for each of the dogs. He knows them intimately and shared cute stories about several of them. We later found out that this was Mattโs first โofficialโ tour ride he was heading up all on his own. We felt honored that we were there that particular afternoon, at that exact time to experience his โsoloโ voyage with him! We would never have known this wasnโt his 100th tour, he was that good!
We will always remember our special afternoon at SNOWHOOK and when we return to Alaska, we will go back again! If anyone is wondering โis the tour worth it?โ โ is this the best sled dog adventure I can hope for? It IS! Donโt hesitate, just go! We couldnโt be happier that we found such a warm, inviting, interesting & memorable adventure in Alaska. We look forward to seeing our new friends again!
P.S. Wear clothes & shoes you don't mind getting muddy! They can...
ย ย ย Read moreOur adventure with Snowhook is one I will never forget! My family did the 2D1N โ Lodge, Dog Sled, Snowmobile & Northern Light Combo tour. The Snowhook facility is one of the most impressive, well-run operations I have ever seen. Our day started with getting picked up at our hotel in Anchorage. Our diver was very friendly, and even made a stop on the way up so we could get coffee. Once we arrived at Snowhook, we were promptly checked in and outfitted in their warm snow boots and suits. Then we were given a brief but very interesting lesson on the Iditarod and dogs. After this, we headed up to the dog yard where we got to meet all the pups as the team got them ready for sledding. The dogs are so friendly and well cared for. It is clear that he owners, Justin and Rebecca, care deeply about the dogs and treat them like family. Dog sledding was one of the most amazing experiences! The pictures speak for themselvesโฆ After dog sledding, we had chili for lunch then Matt got us started on snowmobiles. It was my first time on a snowmobile and his instructions made it so easy to get the hang of! He started out nice and slow until we got the hang of it, then let us have some fun! It was about a 2.5 hour snowmobile ride up to their overnight cabins. Once we arrived at the cabins, we were greeted by Jeff โ who is an absolute enigma lol. We absolutely loved Jeff, maybe as much as we loved the dogs! Their cabins are brand new and so nice. The bathroom is separate, but just steps away from the cabins. Itโs all warm and cozy! Jeff cooked us dinner and taught us all about the northern lights, but unfortunately it dumped a foot of snow overnight, so Aurora didnโt come out for us. It was still cool to learn about them, and we were very entertained at the cabins. The next morning we had breakfast, went out for another snowmobile ride, then headed home! Overall, this experience was incredible and I would definitely do it again. The Snowhook team puts so much care into every aspect of their tours....
