An excellent description of our vast forest resources in Interior Alaska. The Annual Allowable Cut discussion and timber harvest data indicate timber harvesting for economic development, forest products, forest health (in regard to acres burned, blown down, killed by insects and general decadence), wildlife habitat enhancement and resource access could certainly allow an expanded utilization of forest products that would enhance all resource attributes.
Too bad we are so far from markets that would allow a 5 or 10 fold expansion of multiple use management that includes additional timber harvest. No area within the Tanana Valley State Forest or on any other state owned forested lands in the mainland state are even close to a 10% harvest of the scientifically determined Annual Allowable Cut.
Maybe in the future public and agency attitudes and economic conditions will foster a social and economic climate where multiple use forest stewardship is understood...
